An RF base station is fixed-location equipment in a radio access network that sends and receives radio signals to and from mobile devices in one or more cells. The term refers to the network element—not necessarily a single cabinet, antenna, tower, or complete site.
What does “RF base station” mean?
ITU-T Recommendation K.114 defines a base station as “a network element in a radio access network, responsible for radio transmission and reception in one or more cells to or from mobile devices.” The standard describes equipment intended to operate at a fixed location. It may have an integrated antenna or connect to an antenna through feeder cables. ITU-T K.114 (08/2022), section 3.2.3
In plain language, the base station provides the radio link between mobile devices and the radio access network. “RF” refers to the radio-frequency side of that work; the definition is about the network function, not a particular shape or installation.

- Base station: The network element that performs radio transmission and reception.
- Antenna: The component that radiates or receives radio signals. It may be built into the base station or connected to it by feeder cables.
- Site: The location and supporting installation, such as a rooftop or tower, where equipment is installed.
These terms are related, but they are not interchangeable. A tower or rooftop may support antennas and other equipment, while the base station is the network element performing the radio function. ITU-T K.91 discusses exposure around telecommunication installations and notes that a mobile base station’s transmitting antenna typically serves a 120-degree sector. This is a contextual description of typical practice, not a design rule that applies to every base station. ITU-T K.91 (01/2024)

What equipment can make up a base station?
A base station’s baseband and RF functions can be housed together or installed in separate units. ITU-T K.114 describes several equipment arrangements:
Macro base station
In the example described by K.114, power modules, the baseband unit, and the RF unit share a cabinet, while antennas sit outside it and connect by RF cables. The recommendation characterizes this form as physically larger and capable of handling high traffic and covering a wider region. Those are descriptions of the configuration, not a universal coverage or capacity figure. ITU-T K.114 (08/2022)

- Single section
- 3.5 dBd actual gain VHF and 6 dBd actual gain UHF
- 1/2 wave VHF and 5/8 over 5/8 wave UHF
Distributed base station
The baseband and RF units can be installed separately. A nearby or centralized baseband unit connects to a remote RF unit through fiber. “Distributed” describes the equipment layout; it does not by itself specify a coverage area or performance level. ITU-T K.114 (08/2022)

Micro base station
K.114 describes a micro base station with integrated baseband and RF units in a box, used mainly for small-area coverage such as streets, outdoor locations, or hot spots with fewer users. This is a described use context, not a guarantee about the capacity of every micro base station. ITU-T K.114 (08/2022)

Are macro, distributed, and micro the only types?
No. Those terms describe example equipment arrangements and use contexts. K.114 also discusses pico, active-antenna, over-the-air active-antenna, and integrated-antenna forms. It classifies base stations along additional dimensions, including application modality, carrier count, number of supported radio-access technologies, number of bands, and antenna type. These labels refer to different aspects of a design; they are not necessarily mutually exclusive categories or a complete ranking by size and capability. ITU-T K.114 (08/2022)
