An online medical visit is a remote clinical encounter in which you communicate with a health professional using electronic technology. The familiar version is a live video or phone appointment, but telehealth can also include secure messages and information reviewed later. The format alone does not tell you whether a particular health concern can be assessed remotely or whether your insurance covers the service.
What counts as an online medical visit?
In everyday use, an online medical visit usually means getting clinical care without meeting the provider in person. The broader term telehealth refers to electronic communication used to support long-distance health care and related health functions. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), reproducing the Health Resources and Services Administration definition, notes that telehealth may use audio, text messaging, or video technology, including videoconferencing software. HHS Office for Civil Rights: What is telehealth?
That means an online medical visit is not necessarily a video call. It may be a scheduled live appointment, a brief digital check-in, or a non-live exchange in which you send information for a clinician to review. The exact meaning depends on the context: a health-care provider may use “telehealth” broadly, while a payer or government program may define specific services for its own purposes.

| Format | How it works | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| Synchronous (live) | You and a provider communicate in real time. | Video call, audio-only call, or secure text messaging. HHS describes synchronous care as a live interaction between a provider and patient. HHS: Getting started with telehealth |
| Asynchronous (not live) | You and the provider exchange information at different times; the provider reviews it later. | A portal message or store-and-forward exchange of information, such as material sent for clinical review. HHS: Getting started with telehealth |
The American Medical Association uses telehealth as a broad term that can include telemedicine and other remote services, such as online digital visits, brief check-ins, store-and-forward technology, and consultations between professionals. As a result, “online medical visit” is often used casually for several different kinds of remote care; it does not identify one required technology or appointment format. What can happen during a live online visit?
Depending on the service and your concern, a clinician may assess an issue, discuss your health, recommend next steps, or develop a treatment plan. HHS gives acute care, primary care, and behavioral health as examples of direct-to-consumer telehealth appointments. A remote conversation may lead to a diagnosis, treatment plan, or prescription, but none of those outcomes is guaranteed. HHS: Synchronous direct-to-consumer telehealth HHS: Getting started with direct-to-consumer telehealth
Whether a concern can be handled remotely depends on the individual situation and the clinician’s judgment. A video or phone format does not make every kind of examination possible, and an online appointment is not interchangeable with in-person care for every need.

Is an online medical visit the same as a Medicare telehealth visit?
Not necessarily. Ordinary clinical use of “online medical visit” or “telehealth” can cover multiple remote formats. Medicare materials describe Medicare’s own services and rules; they are not universal definitions of what every clinician, insurer, or health plan considers an online visit. Medicare.gov, for example, discusses telehealth coverage and separately identifies e-visits and virtual check-ins. Coverage depends on the applicable Medicare rules and the service involved. Medicare.gov: Telehealth insurance coverage
CMS also uses a narrower definition for the category on its Medicare Telehealth Use Trends Data page: routine office visits provided through synchronous, real-time audio and/or video communication. That is a definition for Medicare data measurement, not a general definition of all online medical care. The CMS page reports data through Q4 2025 and was last modified June 18, 2026. What do you need to join one?
The communication method depends on the provider and service. A phone or computer may be used for a live visit, while a non-live exchange may happen through a patient portal or another secure method. The definition does not imply that you need special telehealth equipment. Follow the provider’s instructions for the chosen appointment, and ask the office how to connect if the access method is unclear.
