An MCP server is a program that makes tools, data, or reusable prompt templates available to an AI application through the Model Context Protocol (MCP). The protocol standardizes how the application discovers and communicates with those capabilities; it does not dictate what the AI application does with the results or guarantee that a server is safe. The key distinction is between the host (the AI application), the client (its MCP communication component), and the server (the program exposing capabilities).

What MCP means

Model Context Protocol (MCP) is an open protocol for connecting AI applications to external tools and data. It is not one particular server, product, or AI model. Instead, it defines a shared way for a client and server to exchange messages so an application can discover capabilities and request them in a structured way.

The protocol has a data layer based on JSON-RPC messages and a transport layer that determines how those messages are framed and delivered. A server might expose a database query operation, documentation, or a reusable prompt; an application can connect to more than one server through its MCP clients. The protocol standardizes the connection and message exchange, not the application’s decisions about whether or how to use returned context.

The current official specification described here is revision 2026-07-28. Its behavior is not interchangeable with older examples: earlier revisions used a connection-scoped session and an initialize handshake, while the current revision specifies stateless per-request processing. See the MCP specification overview for 2026-07-28.

The three roles: host, client, and server

Understanding MCP starts with separating the software roles. A single application may contain more than one role, but the terms describe different responsibilities.

Role What it is responsible for
Host The AI application coordinating the interaction, such as an assistant interface or an AI-enabled editor. It decides how the model and user experience use available MCP capabilities.
Client The host’s protocol component. It communicates with an MCP server, discovers what the server offers, and sends protocol requests on the host’s behalf.
Server A program that exposes capabilities—such as tools, resources, or prompts—to an MCP client.

A host can use multiple clients to connect to multiple servers. For example, an AI coding application might connect to one server that exposes repository information and another that provides access to an internal service. MCP gives those connections a common protocol; the particular servers, permissions, and host behavior still matter.

What an MCP server can expose

The specification describes three familiar kinds of capability. Servers may provide one or several of them; a client can discover which are available rather than assuming every server has all three.

Tools: operations the application can request

A tool is an executable operation, such as querying a database or calling an API. A server describes its tools, including their names and input schemas, so the client and model can identify an appropriate operation and provide structured arguments. The application mediates that interaction: the protocol does not itself decide whether a tool should be called.

The server validates a request, performs the operation it implements, and returns a result. Depending on supported content types, a tool result can contain structured or multimodal content. Tool descriptions and schemas make operations discoverable; they do not establish that an operation is harmless or that its output is trustworthy.

Resources: content a client can read

A resource is data or content that a client can read. In a database example, a server might offer a schema resource that helps explain the database’s structure. The host determines how to present or use that information in its AI experience.

Prompts: reusable templates

A prompt is a reusable template exposed by a server. A database server, for example, could offer a prompt with guidance or examples for using its query tool. This can make a workflow easier to reuse, but it remains separate from the tool that actually performs an operation.

How discovery and tool calls work

An MCP interaction is not simply an AI model guessing an endpoint. The client first discovers the server’s protocol information and available capabilities; it can then enumerate primitives and invoke an operation by name with structured arguments. The broad sequence is:

  1. Connect using a supported transport. The client communicates with the server through stdio or Streamable HTTP, depending on how the server is deployed.
  2. Discover what is available. The client learns the server’s protocol version and capabilities, then lists the available tools, resources, or prompts as applicable.
  3. Select a capability. The host and its model can use the descriptions and schemas to identify a relevant operation. The host remains responsible for how that choice is made and mediated.
  4. Send a structured request. For a tool call, the client sends the tool name and arguments in a protocol message.
  5. Validate, act, and return a result. The server handles the operation and sends a response. The host can then decide how to use the result in the conversation or workflow.

The MCP architecture overview illustrates this pattern with a database server that can expose a query tool, a schema resource, and a prompt with examples for using that tool. That example is a way to understand the roles, not a requirement that every server use a database or offer all three primitives.

How MCP servers communicate: stdio and Streamable HTTP

The transport determines where communication happens and how messages are delivered. Both standard transports carry MCP protocol semantics; choosing one does not change what a tool, resource, or prompt means.

Transport Deployment and message delivery Operational considerations
stdio A client launches a local server as a subprocess. JSON-RPC messages are newline-delimited over the subprocess’s standard streams. The host environment must be able to launch and manage the local process. For stdio implementations, the specification’s general overview advises obtaining credentials from the environment rather than applying its HTTP authorization framework.
Streamable HTTP A server runs behind a remote HTTP endpoint. The client sends messages as HTTP POSTs to one endpoint; responses can be JSON or a request-scoped server-sent events (SSE) stream. The service needs an endpoint that the client can reach. HTTP authorization applies where appropriate; private data and actions performed for users require protection.

The MCP transports overview describes these bindings. In practical terms, stdio fits a server that is launched locally by a client, while Streamable HTTP fits a service accessed over a network. Neither is universally safer or better; deployment needs and the access being granted determine what is appropriate.

What changed in the 2026-07-28 specification

Version context matters when reading examples or implementing a client. The current specification revision makes the protocol core stateless: requests are processed independently, and a server must not infer the client’s capabilities, version, identity, or conversational continuity from an earlier request or from the connection. If state must span requests, it should be represented by an explicit identifier passed with each request.

This is a meaningful difference from older examples based on connection-scoped sessions and an initialize handshake. Check the revision attached to any documentation or code you follow instead of assuming session behavior from an older MCP implementation.

The project’s announcement of the 2026-07-28 specification also describes multi-round-trip requests, cache hints on list results, and a formalized extensions framework that includes Tasks, MCP Apps, and Enterprise-Managed Authorization. These are features of the announced revision and its extensions; they should not be read as evidence that every MCP server or client supports every extension.

Security and trust: MCP is not a safety guarantee

An MCP server can offer operations with real effects, including API calls or file operations. Putting an operation behind MCP standardizes how a client can discover and request it; it does not make the operation safe or set appropriate permissions by itself. Authorization boundaries and the decision about what a server may access remain deployment responsibilities.

  • Review which tools a server exposes and what each can access or change.
  • For servers handling private data or performing actions for users, protect access with the authorization flow defined by the MCP specification. OpenAI’s MCP server guidance recommends stable HTTPS endpoints using Streamable HTTP for production and calls out authorization for private data or user actions.
  • Do not assume every host or client offers identical consent controls. Understand how the specific application mediates tool selection and actions.
  • For local stdio servers, follow the applicable credential-handling guidance; the specification’s general overview advises using environment credentials rather than applying its HTTP authorization framework.

These checks are about the server and the deployment, not a special property of the MCP label. A familiar protocol can make capabilities easier to connect to, but users and operators still need to understand what they are connecting.

Where ScreenshotNeo fits

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers, made by Yorker Media. Its MCP server provides the tools take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf, so an MCP-capable AI application can use those website-capture capabilities through the protocol. It is one concrete example of a server exposing tools; it does not change MCP’s general architecture or make all MCP servers screenshot services. Learn more at ScreenshotNeo.

For a direct API call rather than an MCP interaction, ScreenshotNeo documents a one-request capture. Replace the example URL as needed and use your own API key. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for the available parameters.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie and consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and the response indicates the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server lets AI agents, including Claude, Cursor, and any MCP client, request screenshots. The free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.

Adoption claims are not active-user counts

In its July 2026 project announcement, MCP maintainers reported that Tier 1 SDKs were seeing close to half a billion downloads a month and that the TypeScript and Python SDKs had each crossed one billion total downloads. Those are maintainers’ reported SDK download figures, not independent verification or a count of active developers. The same announcement quotes David Soria Parra, a member of technical staff and MCP co-inventor, calling the release “MCP’s most important since remote MCP first launched over a year ago.” That is his assessment, not a measured comparison.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is an MCP server the same thing as an AI model?

No. A server exposes capabilities to an MCP client; the AI model and the host application that uses it are separate parts of the system.

Can an MCP server expose more than tools?

Yes. MCP servers can expose tools, resources, prompts, or a combination of these, depending on what the server implements.

Does every MCP client support the same capabilities?

Do not assume so. Check the specific client and server documentation, especially for revision-specific behavior and extensions.
