An inswinging yorker is a very full cricket delivery that pitches near the batter’s toes or the base of the stumps and swings inward toward the batter in flight. “Yorker” describes where the ball pitches; “inswinging” describes how it moves before pitching. A regular yorker does not necessarily travel straight—it simply has no particular swing direction specified.

What makes a delivery a yorker?

A yorker is bowled very full, with the intended pitching spot around the batter’s toes, popping crease, or the base of the stumps. It is a description of length and target, not of the ball’s movement through the air. The Australian Cricket Institute’s coaching guide describes the target as around the toes and notes that a bowler can vary the line: at the feet, at the stumps, or wide of off stump.

Line and length are separate choices. A bowler might aim a yorker at the batter’s feet, at the stumps, or wide of off stump; the ball can still be a yorker in each case if it lands very full.

What does “inswinging” mean?

Inswing is inward movement through the air toward the striker. The term describes direction relative to the batter, so it should not be reduced to “left” or “right”: the apparent direction depends on the batter’s handedness and the viewer’s viewpoint. The ECB’s explanation of swing bowling by Stuart Broad discusses swing plans in relation to right- and left-handed batters.

Length answers where the ball pitches; swing answers how it moves before pitching. Those are different axes. A yorker can swing inward, swing outward, or show little obvious swing. “Regular yorker” is informal shorthand for a yorker whose swing direction has not been specified, not a separate formal category or a guarantee that the ball goes straight.

Why combine inward swing with a yorker?

A very full ball leaves little time for the batter to bring the bat down accurately, especially when it targets the feet or stumps. Inward movement adds another adjustment: the batter must judge the curve as well as defend a ball pitching close to the crease. Depending on its line, the delivery can threaten the stumps or the pads. It is a difficult ball to face, not an automatic wicket; a batter can still defend or score from it.

The ICC’s 2019 account of Wasim Akram’s view of Jasprit Bumrah’s yorker describes the objective of pitching at the base of the stumps and stopping the batter from driving straight. Akram’s praise was his opinion at the time, not a current ranking or evidence that one yorker type is always more effective than another.

How do bowlers practise yorker accuracy?

Practising the landing spot first keeps the task concrete: aim at a marker near the toes or stumps, then work on repeating the length before adding swing as another variable. Accuracy is difficult, and a missed length changes the risk. A ball that lands short can become a hittable half-volley; one that misses too full may be a full toss.

The Australian Cricket Institute advises bowlers to err on the full side when a yorker misses, on the grounds that a low full toss is harder to hit than a half-volley. That is coaching advice, not a guarantee about the result of every miss.

Separate targets and a changing batter

In an ECB feature, England fast bowler Chris Jordan describes practising a wide yorker, a straight yorker, and a leg-stump yorker for a batter who backs away. He says coach Ottis Gibson sometimes changes the target as Jordan gathers, simulating a batter moving in the crease. This illustrates why practising line as well as length matters: the intended landing spot can change with the batter’s movement.

Jordan’s stated target in his nine-ball high-intensity drill was “about six yorkers and three slower balls.” That is his individual practice goal, not a general accuracy benchmark. He also noted that modern bats make precision important, but the drill does not establish a universal success rate.

Release and alignment advice

In a BCCI interview, Umesh Yadav recalled Wasim Akram’s advice to focus on the intended pitching spot, body alignment, and follow-through. Yadav also described wrist position and release alignment as relevant to controlling swing. These are attributed coaching perspectives, not a single technique prescribed for every bowler.
