An installable file system (IFS) is an operating-system extension mechanism: a loadable driver or related interface that adds support for filesystems or remote file access beyond what the operating system handles by default. IFS is not itself a disk format such as NTFS or Ext2. The term is especially associated with historical OS/2 terminology; current Windows documentation more often uses “file-system driver” and “file-system filter driver.”
What does IFS mean?
A filesystem organizes files and directories and defines how data, names, and paths are represented. In Microsoft’s Windows documentation, each filesystem consists of one or more drivers and DLLs that define its data formats and features. The documentation identifies NTFS, exFAT, UDF, and FAT32 as the four main filesystems available in Windows. Microsoft’s overview of Windows filesystems describes these components.
An IFS is the mechanism for adding filesystem support, not the format being added. A historical OS/2-oriented glossary uses IFS for an API that could extend OS/2 beyond FAT and HPFS and provide access to files on network servers. That describes OS/2 usage, not a universal interface shared by every modern operating system. The OS/2 glossary entry documents that historical meaning.
How is an IFS different from a file-system filter driver?
A filesystem driver supplies the behavior that lets the operating system work with a filesystem. A filter driver has a different role: it attaches to the filesystem stack to monitor, filter, or modify I/O handled by one or more filesystems. A filter does not, simply by being a filter, define the filesystem’s on-disk format.

What does installing a filesystem driver involve?
On Windows, an INF file gives SetupAPI installation instructions for a filesystem driver, including which files to copy and configuration such as the start type and load-order group. Microsoft’s documentation says kernel-mode components on 64-bit Windows Vista and later must be signed to load and execute. The exact requirements depend on the Windows release and driver type, so use current platform-specific instructions for a particular driver. See Microsoft’s filesystem-driver installation guidance.

“Installable” does not mean that a driver works with every operating system or filesystem. Compatibility depends on the driver, the operating-system version, and the filesystem features it supports. A driver’s age and stated support range matter, especially for software operating in kernel mode.

The Ext2 Installable File System project is a dated example, not evidence of current compatibility. Its download page lists version 1.12, released December 31, 2015, with support through Windows 8.1 and Windows Server 2012 R2; it also says the software cannot access Ext4 volumes. The package description says setup installs and configures a kernel-mode driver and includes a control-panel component for assigning drive letters. Those details apply to that project and its listed releases only. Check the project’s download page; its stated support does not establish that it is suitable for newer Windows versions.
