An install program is software, a script, or a command that carries out the steps needed to set up another application. What it does depends on the context: it might copy files, configure an app, or run an installer as part of a managed deployment. The phrase can also mean the specific GNU/Linux install command, which copies files rather than serving as a package manager.
What does “install program” mean?
In general software usage, an install program performs setup actions that make an application available on a computer. It may copy files into the right locations, configure settings, or invoke other setup operations. It can be a graphical installer, command-line executable, script, or command; the term does not imply that the user sees a setup wizard.
The exact meaning depends on where you encountered the phrase. A Linux command reference and a Windows application-deployment console may use similar wording for different things.
How the term differs by context
| Context | What it refers to | Key distinction |
|---|---|---|
| General software use | An executable, script, or command that performs application setup | Its actions depend on the software and platform; it may copy files, configure the system, or invoke other setup steps. |
| GNU/Linux coreutils | The install command |
It copies files to chosen destinations and can set attributes; it is not a package manager. |
| Microsoft Configuration Manager | An installation program and any required properties in an application deployment type | The deployment type also specifies installation files and rules for when and how the client installs the application. |
| Microsoft Intune Win32 deployment | An install command line or PowerShell script, together with its install context | The deployment must run silently and can be configured for system or user context. |
What does the Linux install command do?
The GNU/Linux coreutils command named install copies files to destinations you choose and can set file attributes. The Linux man-pages project describes it as copying files, often compiled files, into selected destination locations (Linux man-pages: install(1)).

Despite its name, this command is not the usual way to install a ready-to-use software package. The manual recommends using a package manager, such as apt-get or yum, for that job. A package manager handles package installation; install is a file-copying utility.
What does “installation program” mean in managed Windows deployment?
Configuration Manager
In Microsoft Configuration Manager, an application deployment type includes an installation program and any properties needed to run it. The deployment type also defines the installation files and rules governing when and how the client installs the application (Microsoft Learn: Create applications – Configuration Manager). The installation program is the command or executable the client runs; Configuration Manager is the management system that defines and schedules its deployment.

Microsoft Intune Win32 apps
For a Win32 app in Intune, the install command can be a command line or a PowerShell script, and the deployment configuration specifies whether installation runs in system or user context. Microsoft’s guidance requires the installation to be silent, without user interaction (Microsoft Learn: Add and Assign Win32 Apps to Microsoft Intune). In this setting, “install program” describes what Intune runs—not Intune itself.

How to tell which meaning applies
- If you see
installin a Linux terminal or command manual, it likely names the file-copying utility. - If the phrase appears in an application setup guide, it usually means the executable, script, or command that performs setup.
- If it appears in Configuration Manager or Intune, it refers to the app’s configured installer command or script, with deployment rules set by the management system.
