An Instagram Broadcast Channel is a public, one-to-many messaging space where a creator shares updates with followers. People can preview or join a channel; joining brings its updates into their Instagram channel experience, subject to channel and personal controls. Unlike a private chat, it is built for creator-to-audience communication, not a private group conversation.
How do Instagram Broadcast Channels work?
A creator posts to the channel, and followers who join can receive and interact with those updates. Meta describes the format as “a one-to-many messaging tool that allows creators to engage directly with their followers at scale.” Channels may include text, photos, video, voice notes, and polls, according to Meta’s original feature announcement.
Meta describes channels as public and discoverable: people can view channel content and choose whether to join. This makes a channel different from a private chat, where participants communicate in a personal messaging conversation. Do not treat a broadcast channel as a private space.

Yes. The feature has expanded since its original launch. At launch, Meta described followers as being able to react to creator messages and vote in polls. In a December 2024 update, Meta announced replies, prompts, and insights.

Replies let followers respond to creator messages and to one another in nested threads. Creators can enable replies through channel controls. Prompts let creators ask questions or offer check-ins that followers can respond to.
Reactions and polls
Reactions and poll votes provide lighter-weight ways for followers to participate without composing a reply. These options were part of Meta’s launch-era description.
Channel insights
Meta also announced insights for creators, including information about interactions, story shares, and poll votes.

How popular are Instagram Broadcast Channels?
Meta said in its December 4, 2024 announcement that creators and followers exchanged over 1.5 billion messages per month on broadcast channels. That figure is Meta’s reported monthly volume in 2024, not an independently verified current statistic.

People can preview or join channels, but the sources cited here do not establish current creator eligibility, regional availability, or a universal account requirement. Instagram’s availability and app interface can change, so check the current options in your own account rather than relying on a fixed follower threshold or set of navigation steps.
Meta’s launch announcement also described controls to mute or leave a channel and adjust notifications. Those are launch-era details; exact labels and notification defaults may differ in the current app.
