Headers can express preferences, provide credentials, guide caching, or carry conditional-request information. Each field’s name identifies its meaning, and its value follows rules specific to that field.
What an HTTP request header is
HTTP specifications call these name/value elements fields. In everyday use, “header” often means a field carried in the message’s header section, before its content. RFC 9110 describes that section as “a sequence of header field lines.” See RFC 9110, Section 6.3, the IETF HTTP Semantics specification published by the RFC Editor in June 2022.
A field name tells the recipient what the associated value means. Field names are case-insensitive, so Accept and accept identify the same field. The value’s syntax and meaning depend on the field’s definition; values are not all arbitrary plain text. RFC 9110, Section 5 defines the shared field terminology and semantics.
What request headers do
Fields let a client communicate relevant details alongside a request. Depending on the field, that can include what response formats it prefers, authentication information, caching instructions, or data used to make a request conditional. A field does not have one universal effect: its specific definition determines how the recipient interprets it. MDN’s request-header glossary provides an overview and examples.

Authorization: Bearer <token>This is a schematic HTTP/1.1 text example. Host, Accept, and Authorization are field names; the text after each colon is the corresponding value. The authorization value is illustrative: the required format and meaning depend on the relevant authentication scheme and application.
Why “request header” does not describe every field’s formal category
“Request header” is convenient shorthand for a field appearing in a request, but HTTP also classifies fields by their role. For example, Content-Type can appear in a request while being categorized as a representation header. The direction in which a field appears and its formal category are not always the same thing. How headers look across HTTP versions
The example above uses the familiar textual form associated with HTTP/1.x: a field name, a colon, and a value. It should not be mistaken for the on-wire format of HTTP/2 or later. Those protocols use different message representations; developer tools may display field names in lowercase, and HTTP/2 uses special pseudo-header fields whose names begin with a colon. RFC 9110 defines shared HTTP semantics, while version-specific specifications define protocol framing and representation. For the browser-facing overview, see MDN’s HTTP headers reference.
