An HTTP GET request asks a server to transfer the current selected representation of a target resource. In practical terms, a browser uses GET to retrieve a page, image, stylesheet, or script, while an API client uses it to read a resource or a filtered collection. GET describes the requested operation; it does not promise that the response will be a particular file format or even a successful result.
GET in one HTTP exchange
A request sent to an origin server commonly has a method, request target, headers, and sometimes content. In this example, GET is the method, /products is the path, and category=books is a query parameter:
GET /products?category=books HTTP/1.1
Host: example.com
Accept: application/json
The request-target is a path with an optional query for an origin-form request. The Accept header tells the server which response media types the client prefers; it does not force the server to return JSON. The server may respond with a representation, a redirect, an error, or another status defined by that application.
RFC 9110, section 9.3.1, defines the method precisely: “The GET method requests transfer of a current selected representation for the target resource.” A representation is the server’s selected form of the resource at that time, such as HTML, JSON, an image, or a generated document.

What GET means in an API
API designers normally use GET for read operations. A collection endpoint might return a list, while a member endpoint returns one item:
GET /userscan request a collection.GET /users/42can request one identified resource.GET /users?role=editor&limit=20can request a filtered or paginated representation.
The path identifies the resource and the query commonly expresses retrieval criteria, sorting, pagination, or a representation variant. The server’s API contract determines which parameters are valid and what status codes or fields it returns. A GET request is not automatically public: authentication headers, cookies, authorization rules, and application permissions still apply.
Resource retrieval is not file download
“Transfer a representation” is broader than “download a file.” A response can be computed dynamically, stream an image, return JSON metadata, or contain an error document. Content negotiation, compression, and server-side rendering can all change the bytes transferred without changing the method’s retrieval intent.
Safe and idempotent: the exact meanings
Safe means read-only by the requested operation
HTTP calls GET a safe method because the operation requested by the client is intended to be read-only. Safe does not mean the entire request has no consequences. Servers may log the request, update metrics, refresh a cache, or perform other incidental work. Those effects do not turn GET into a method for asking the server to change a resource.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIdempotent means repeatable intended effect
GET is also idempotent. If a client sends the same request again, the intended effect on the server is the same as sending it once. The responses can differ because the resource, authorization, or surrounding state may have changed; idempotence concerns the method’s intended server effect, not identical bytes or status codes.

These are protocol properties, not a guarantee that every endpoint is well designed. An endpoint that deletes data when called with GET violates normal HTTP semantics even if a particular implementation happens to do it. Clients should not assume an arbitrary URL is harmless merely because its method is GET.
Query strings, encoding, and privacy
Query parameters are part of the target URI. Encode values rather than concatenating raw user input, and use an established client library when possible. For example, a search term containing spaces and reserved characters must be percent-encoded:
GET /search?q=green%20tea&page=2 HTTP/1.1
Host: example.com
URIs can appear in browser history, bookmarks, proxy records, web-server logs, analytics systems, referrer data, and monitoring tools. RFC 9110 therefore warns that sensitive user-provided information may be inappropriate to disclose in a URI. Do not place passwords, session secrets, private messages, or other confidential values in a query string merely because the request is a GET. HTTPS protects the connection in transit, but it does not erase URI exposure at endpoints that log or store it. Authentication, authorization, and careful logging policies remain necessary.
Can a GET request have a body?
HTTP permits request content at the message level, but GET content has no generally defined semantics. RFC 9110 says clients should not generate content in a GET request unless the origin server has explicitly indicated that it supports a purpose for it. Intermediaries and servers may ignore, reject, or mishandle such content, so behavior is not portable.
If an operation needs a structured input document, use the API’s documented method—often POST—instead of relying on a GET body. Put ordinary retrieval criteria in the path or query where the API specifies them. A client library may expose a “body” option for every method; that convenience does not create interoperable GET semantics.

GET compared with POST
| Decision axis | GET | POST |
|---|---|---|
| Typical intent | Retrieve a representation of the target resource | Ask the target resource to process request content |
| Where criteria or input commonly go | Path and query in the URI | Request content may carry data |
| Safe and idempotent by standard semantics | Yes | Not guaranteed by the method |
| Cache semantics | Responses are defined as cacheable, subject to directives | Support and conditions differ; do not assume ordinary shared caching |
| Privacy consideration | URI values can be exposed by history and logs | Can carry data in content when putting it in the URI is inappropriate |
This is a semantic comparison, not a blanket security rule. HTTPS, authorization, browser behavior, server logs, and the application design determine confidentiality and access. POST is not automatically private, and GET is not automatically unauthenticated.
Caching and conditional retrieval
A GET response is cacheable under HTTP semantics. RFC 9110 states that a cache may use a stored GET response to satisfy later GET or HEAD requests unless the Cache-Control header indicates otherwise. Cacheability means reuse is permitted under the response’s rules; it does not mean every response is cached.
Servers can control reuse with directives such as Cache-Control: no-store, no-cache, freshness lifetimes, and validators. A client can make a conditional request using a validator supplied by an earlier response:
GET /catalog HTTP/1.1
Host: example.com
If-None-Match: "catalog-v17"
If the representation has not changed, the server can return 304 Not Modified without sending the full body. A changed representation normally returns 200 OK with a new validator. Correct cache keys, authorization variation, and cache-control policy are essential; never let a shared cache serve one user’s private representation to another.
Making GET requests yourself
cURL
curl --get "https://api.example.com/products"
--data-urlencode "category=books"
--data-urlencode "page=2"
-H "Accept: application/json"
--get places the encoded data in the query string. Add an API’s documented authorization header, for example -H "Authorization: Bearer YOUR_TOKEN"; do not paste real secrets into shell history or shared logs.

Or skip the browser setup
If your goal is a dependable screenshot rather than learning browser automation, ScreenshotNeo exposes the capture as one HTTP GET request. It accepts consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be disabled. Only clean shots are billed, while bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, with the result identified by X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers.
cURL (see the ScreenshotNeo API documentation):
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
The same GET endpoint can be called from Python:
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
Or Node.js:
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
ScreenshotNeo also provides an MCP server with take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Sign up for the free plan.
Troubleshooting GET requests
Unexpected 400 or 404
Check the exact path, required query names, URL encoding, API version, and trailing-slash behavior. A 404 can mean the route or resource identifier does not exist; a 400 often means malformed or missing parameters.

The server ignores query parameters
Confirm the parameter spelling and whether the endpoint expects repeated keys, comma-separated values, or a different route. Inspect the final encoded URL emitted by your client.
A GET body is ignored
That behavior is expected for many servers and intermediaries because GET content has no generally defined semantics. Move the data into documented query parameters or use the method specified by the API.
Stale data appears
Inspect Cache-Control, ETag, Age, and intermediary behavior. Use a conditional request or the API’s documented cache-bypass option rather than adding arbitrary cache-busting secrets to a URI.
Redirects or HTML instead of JSON
Follow redirects only when appropriate, check the final URL and Content-Type, and verify that authentication is not being lost across a host change. An HTML login page is not a JSON API response even if the transport succeeded.
Practical checklist
- Use GET when the client is asking to retrieve a representation.
- Put documented filters and pagination in an encoded path or query.
- Keep secrets and sensitive personal data out of URIs.
- Do not depend on a GET request body without explicit server documentation.
- Set timeouts, check status and content type, and handle redirects deliberately.
- Understand the response’s cache directives before reusing or storing it.
- Remember that safe and idempotent describe intended method semantics, not a promise that every URL is harmless.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does GET always return the latest data?
No. A fresh response can be generated, or a permitted cache can reuse an earlier representation. Cache-Control, validators, and intermediary policy determine whether revalidation occurs.
Is a GET URL safe to share?
Not necessarily. It may contain identifying or sensitive query data and can be recorded in history, logs, analytics, or referrer data. Treat the complete URI as potentially exposed.
Can GET be used for authentication?
Authentication can accompany GET through mechanisms such as an Authorization header or cookie, but the endpoint still must enforce authorization. Never put bearer tokens or passwords in the query string.
