An Evolved Node B, usually written eNodeB or eNB, is the base station in an LTE network. It provides the radio connection for a phone or other user equipment (UE) and connects the LTE radio access network to the Evolved Packet Core (EPC). In short: UE ⇄ radio interface ⇄ eNodeB ⇄ EPC.
What does “Evolved Node B” mean?
“Evolved Node B” is the LTE base-station name; “E-UTRAN Node B” is another form of the term. The abbreviations eNodeB and eNB are both commonly used. The Korea Telecommunications Technology Association (TTA) identifies “Evolved Node B” as the 3GPP official name. TTA’s terminology entry describes the eNodeB as relaying communication between user equipment and the EPC.
Where does an eNodeB fit in an LTE network?
The eNodeB is part of the E-UTRAN, LTE’s radio access network. A UE—such as a mobile phone—communicates with it over a radio link. The eNodeB then connects toward the EPC, the LTE core network. The eNodeB is therefore the radio access point between the device and the core, not the core network itself.
How is an eNodeB different from a 3G Node B?
| Aspect | 3G Node B | LTE eNodeB |
|---|---|---|
| Radio access architecture | UTRAN (UMTS) | E-UTRAN (LTE) |
| Relationship to radio network control | Arranged separately from a Radio Network Controller (RNC) | No separate RNC in the LTE architecture; the eNodeB assumes related functions that were split between the Node B and RNC in 3G |
| Core-network relationship | Part of the 3G UMTS/UTRAN architecture | Connects directly toward the EPC |
The word “evolved” reflects this architectural change: LTE combines radio-network responsibilities that were divided between the 3G Node B and RNC. It describes the network role, not a guarantee that every deployment uses a single physical cabinet or implements every feature identically. TTA’s definition and comparison identify the LTE and 3G distinction.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Is an eNodeB the same as a 5G gNodeB?
No. An eNodeB (eNB) is the LTE base station; a gNodeB (gNB) is the 5G New Radio base station. They are related concepts but refer to different radio access technologies. TTA distinguishes LTE’s eNodeB from 5G’s gNodeB in its terminology comparison.
What does the eNodeB do in LTE security standards?
LTE security specifications include requirements specific to the eNB network product class. For example, 3GPP TS 33.216, Release 18, version 18.1.0 covers security assurance objectives, requirements, and test cases for eNBs. It includes requirements concerning control-plane confidentiality and integrity on S1/X2 and user-plane ciphering between Uu and S1/X2. One requirement states: “The eNB shall provide confidentiality protection for control plane packets on the S1/X2 reference points.” These are specification requirements; citing them does not establish that a particular commercial product or network configuration has been tested.
