An encoder-decoder architecture turns an input sequence into a related output sequence: an encoder builds representations of the input, and a decoder uses them to generate the output. In a Transformer, the encoder uses self-attention to contextualize input positions; the decoder uses causal self-attention to track earlier output tokens and cross-attention to consult the encoded input.
What problem does an encoder-decoder architecture solve?
Some tasks take one sequence and produce another, and the two sequences do not need to have the same length. Machine translation is a straightforward example: the input is text in one language, and the output is a translation in another. The original Transformer was proposed for sequence transduction and reported experiments in machine translation and parsing. The paper, “Attention Is All You Need”, describes that architecture; PyTorch also illustrates attention-based sequence-to-sequence translation in its translation tutorial.
The encoder-decoder pattern is broader than the Transformer. The roles are an input-processing encoder and an output-producing decoder; the particular layers and generation method depend on the model. The attention and masking details below describe the Transformer example, not a requirement that every encoder-decoder system work identically.
What does the Transformer encoder do?
The encoder processes the input sequence and produces a contextual representation at each position. Self-attention lets each position incorporate information from other positions in the input, while feed-forward layers further transform those representations. These are learned vector states, not necessarily a single compressed summary of the entire input. Some framework interfaces call the encoder output “memory.” Hugging Face’s encoder-decoder explanation describes the encoder and decoder flow; PyTorch uses the memory term in its TransformerDecoder API.

A useful mental model is that the encoder prepares a set of contextual notes about the input. The notes remain a sequence of representations that the decoder can consult, rather than one literal paragraph or a fixed-length bottleneck.
How does the Transformer decoder generate output?
In the autoregressive Transformer setup, the decoder builds the output one token at a time. Its blocks use two different attention relationships: causal self-attention over the target sequence so far, and cross-attention from decoder states to the encoder’s output.

Causal self-attention looks backward through the output
When predicting a token at a given position, causal masking prevents the decoder from using later target tokens. It can use earlier generated tokens, which gives it the context needed to continue the sequence without seeing the answer in advance.
Cross-attention consults the encoded input
Cross-attention connects the decoder to the encoder representations. As it generates, the decoder can retrieve input information relevant to the output it is building. The next-token distribution is conditioned on both that source representation and the preceding target tokens; generation can then proceed autoregressively until the output is complete. Why did the original Transformer use attention?
The original Transformer replaced recurrent and convolutional sequence-processing layers with attention-based layers. Its paper presented the architecture and reported translation and parsing experiments, while later explanations describe how attention relates positions without a recurrent structure. These design choices do not establish that every Transformer is faster or more accurate for every current task; performance depends on the model, workload, and implementation.
How should you compare encoder-decoder models or implementations?
Choose against the task and deployment constraints rather than the architecture name alone. The cited technical explanations establish how the components work, but they do not provide a controlled, current benchmark across models.

- Task fit: Confirm that the system accepts the input you have and produces the output you need, such as a translation, summary, or other generated sequence.
- Architecture: Check whether it has an encoder and decoder, what attention masks it uses, and whether the decoder can attend to the source representations.
- Training path: Find out whether suitable pretrained checkpoints are available and whether fine-tuning is needed. Hugging Face documents composing a pretrained encoder with an autoregressive decoder; depending on the decoder, newly added cross-attention layers may require initialization.
- Generation constraints: Evaluate output quality, supported sequence lengths, throughput, and latency on the intended workload. These are questions to test, not outcomes established by the sources cited here.
- Implementation support: Check framework support, model availability, and deployment requirements. An API that demonstrates the architecture may not be the best fit for production.
What to know about PyTorch’s TransformerDecoder
PyTorch’s torch.nn.TransformerDecoder is a stack of decoder layers. Its memory input is the output sequence from the final encoder layer. PyTorch describes the module as a foundational reference implementation of the original architecture, with limited features compared with newer Transformer models; it is useful for understanding the building blocks, but the documentation cautions against assuming it is the best production choice.
The API documentation also warns that the decoder layers are initialized with the same parameters and recommends manually initializing them after construction. Consult the live API documentation and the relevant framework tutorial when implementing a system, rather than treating a reference module as a complete production recipe.
