Its USB audio endpoint sends rate feedback to the host, which adjusts how many samples it delivers. “Asynchronous” describes this timing arrangement—not a sound-quality grade or a guarantee that the DAC will work with every host.
What “asynchronous” means for a USB DAC
A USB DAC receives digital audio from a host, such as a computer or phone, and converts it to analog audio. In USB Audio Class terminology, asynchronous is one of three synchronization types for isochronous audio endpoints; the other two are synchronous and adaptive. The type describes how the endpoint’s audio rate relates to clock timing.
For playback, the DAC is the sink: it receives audio data sent by the host. In an asynchronous endpoint, the DAC’s sample timing follows an external-to-USB clock or a free-running clock inside the device, rather than the host’s USB timing. The USB-IF Audio Class definition describes the endpoint as unable to synchronize to USB start-of-frame timing or another clock in the USB domain. See the USB Audio Class definition and the USB 2.0 specification, section 5.12.4.1.1.
How USB feedback keeps playback in step
The host still schedules and sends the audio data over USB. The asynchronous sink reports its desired data rate relative to USB frame or microframe timing. The host uses that explicit feedback to adjust how many audio samples it sends, helping prevent the DAC’s buffer from emptying or overflowing.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
So “asynchronous” does not mean unscheduled, uncontrolled streaming. USB still carries the data in time-sensitive isochronous transfers; asynchronous describes the clock relationship and rate-matching method, not the transfer type. The USB 2.0 specification says that asynchronous endpoints cannot synchronize to USB-domain clocks and describes explicit feedback for asynchronous sinks.
Asynchronous vs. synchronous vs. adaptive USB audio
| Endpoint type | Clock or rate relationship | In plain language |
|---|---|---|
| Asynchronous | The endpoint follows an external-to-USB or free-running device clock. An asynchronous sink supplies explicit rate feedback. | The DAC’s audio timing is independent of USB frame timing; the host follows the DAC’s rate feedback. |
| Synchronous | The sample clock follows USB start-of-frame timing. | USB timing governs the endpoint’s sample timing. |
| Adaptive | The endpoint adapts its rate to the rate imposed at its interface; the Audio Class definition describes an internal process that matches its natural rate to the imposed rate. | The endpoint adjusts its audio rate to the incoming or requested data flow. |
These are synchronization and rate-matching approaches, not a simple ranking from poor to good.

Does an asynchronous USB DAC sound better?
The label alone does not establish that one DAC sounds better than another. It identifies how the endpoint’s timing relates to USB timing; it does not, by itself, prove a measurable or audible advantage, eliminate all jitter, or say anything about a model’s supported formats or host compatibility. The standards define endpoint behavior, not comparative listening results.
To assess a particular DAC, check its manufacturer’s documentation for supported sample rates and formats, compatibility with your operating system or device, power requirements, and analog outputs. For comparisons, consider those specifications alongside measured performance, connections, and price rather than treating “asynchronous” as a quality verdict.

Which USB Audio specification defines the term?
The detailed endpoint synchronization explanation above comes from the USB Audio Class 1.0 definition and the USB 2.0 specification. USB-IF’s Audio Device Class Definition Release 4.0 page is dated October 31, 2025. Separately, a USB-IF document-library listing dated September 15, 2026, shows the Audio Device Class Definition Release 2.0 with errata and ECN through September 14, 2026. These publication details do not change the meaning of “asynchronous” described here. See USB-IF’s Release 4.0 specification page and its document library listing.
