An application delivery controller (ADC) is a network device or software service that manages traffic between clients and application servers. It can distribute requests among servers, check whether they are healthy, and apply configured routing or security policies. Load balancing is central to many ADCs, but the term can cover a broader set of application-traffic functions.
How an ADC handles an application request
An ADC sits in the request path, commonly between a firewall and web or application servers. Instead of a client choosing a particular server, the client connects to the ADC. The ADC evaluates the request against its configuration, selects an appropriate backend, and forwards the traffic.
- Receive: The ADC accepts a client connection or request on behalf of the application.
- Evaluate: It can check backend health and apply configured rules, such as routing a request according to its application-layer details.
- Forward: It sends the request to a selected server and relays the response back to the client.
Health checks can help keep traffic away from unavailable backends, while routing policy can determine which available server handles a request. The exact checks and behavior depend on the product and its configuration. By handling some connection and traffic-management work, an ADC can reduce the work that application servers must do themselves; it does not remove the need to design and operate the application correctly.
What functions can an ADC provide?
Load balancing is a core ADC function: it distributes traffic across multiple servers according to configured rules. Depending on the product, license, and deployment, an ADC may also provide these capabilities:

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Layer 7 routing: Directing application requests using information such as the requested host or path.
- TLS termination or offloading: Handling encrypted connections at the ADC rather than at each backend server, where the architecture and configuration support it.
- Proxying: Accepting requests on behalf of servers and processing traffic between clients and backends.
- Security controls: Applying configured policies or integrating with application firewall capabilities.
- Health monitoring and visibility: Checking backend availability and providing information about traffic or service health.
- High availability: Supporting resilient operation when deployed and configured with suitable redundant components.
These are possible or common capabilities, not a checklist that every ADC meets. Having an ADC does not by itself guarantee stronger security or higher availability; those outcomes depend on the features selected, policy, deployment, and ongoing operations.
How an ADC differs from a load balancer or reverse proxy
The names describe overlapping roles rather than strictly separate kinds of equipment. A traditional load balancer focuses on distributing traffic among servers. An ADC commonly includes load balancing and may combine it with application-layer routing, TLS handling, proxying, monitoring, and security functions. F5’s 2024 training material cautions: “A common misconception is that an Application Delivery Controller (ADC) is an advanced load-balancer. This is not an adequate description.” The distinction is that an ADC may manage more of the application traffic path, not that every ADC has a fixed set of additional features.

A reverse proxy also accepts requests on behalf of backend servers and can apply application-layer processing. Many modern products perform both reverse-proxy and ADC functions. When comparing systems, focus on what traffic they handle and which capabilities are actually included, rather than relying on the label alone.
Where ADCs run
An ADC can be delivered as a physical hardware appliance or as software, including virtualized deployments. ADC capabilities are also available in cloud and SaaS environments. The right form depends on the traffic being served, scaling requirements, security needs, integrations, observability, and the team’s operational environment. Product packaging and available capabilities vary, so verify the details for the specific service or edition under consideration.
