The caller follows the interface’s rules without needing to know how the other program works inside.
How an API works: a weather app example
Imagine a weather app showing current conditions for a location. The app is the client: it asks a weather service for information. The service makes an endpoint available, and the app sends a request to that endpoint. The service returns a response the app can display.
- Client: the software making the request, such as the weather app.
- Endpoint: a specific address through which the client accesses an API resource or operation.
- Request: the client’s message, with instructions and any required information.
- Response: the service’s result or an error that the client can handle.
Google Cloud uses a weather request to illustrate this pattern. A sample URL or key in an example is illustrative, not a real service to call. The important point is the exchange: the client uses the documented interface, and the service returns a defined response.
An API is an interface and a contract
An API sets out which operations are available, how to request them, and what to expect in return. That makes it a boundary between the caller and the implementation behind it. A caller can use the published operations without knowing how the provider stores data, runs its code, or performs the work.

MDN Web Docs describes an API as features and rules that allow software to interact with a program rather than through a human user interface. NIST’s glossary describes an API as a system access point or library function with defined syntax and functionality. In practical terms, both point to the same idea: software gets a reliable, specified way to use another program’s capabilities.
A restaurant menu or electrical socket can help explain the abstraction: the user makes a defined request without operating the machinery behind the service. But an API is more precise than either analogy. Its contract can also define data formats, errors, permissions, and operational behavior.
Not every API is a web API
“API” describes an interface, not one particular technology or location. An API might be a library function used inside a program, a browser feature, an operating-system facility, or a service reached over a network. MDN distinguishes browser APIs, such as Web Audio, from third-party APIs, such as a mapping service. Both let software use defined functionality; they need not work in the same way.

A web API is reached using web technologies or network communication. Many web APIs use HTTP, but HTTP is not part of the definition of every API. Likewise, not every API is publicly available: access may be limited to a particular application, organization, or authorized caller.

API, HTTP, endpoint, and REST: what each term means
| Term | Meaning |
|---|---|
| API | The interface and rules a software caller uses. It can be local or remote, and it may or may not use HTTP. |
| Web API | An API accessed through web technologies or a network service. Browser features can also have APIs. |
| HTTP | A client-server protocol: a client sends a request and receives a response. HTTP is stateless by default, though cookies can add state to some interactions. |
| Endpoint | A specific URL a client uses to access an API resource or operation. |
| REST | An architectural style for networked APIs, commonly organized around resources and stateless interactions. |
These terms are related, but they are not interchangeable. An API is the broader interface; HTTP is a protocol that many web APIs use; REST is an architectural style that an API may follow. A REST API is one kind of network API, not a synonym for all APIs.
MDN notes that “RESTful” is sometimes used loosely for HTTP services that do not satisfy every REST constraint. So a service being described as RESTful does not, by itself, tell you every detail of its design.

What happens in a typical HTTP API request?
- The client selects a documented endpoint. API documentation explains available endpoints, expected inputs, and the data or functionality they expose.
- The client sends an HTTP request. The request specifies a method. Headers carry metadata, while a request body may carry submitted data.
- The service checks the request. Depending on the API, it may check the caller’s identity, permissions, inputs, or other conditions.
- The service returns a response. The response commonly contains a result or an error. The client decides how to use it, such as displaying data or handling a failure.
HTTP methods give a request an intended operation. GET commonly retrieves information; POST commonly submits it. REST-style APIs also commonly use PUT and DELETE. The actual behavior and requirements are defined by the particular API, so read its documentation rather than assuming every service treats a method identically.
Authentication and authorization are different
Some APIs require callers to prove who or what they are. Authentication establishes identity; authorization determines which actions or data that identity is permitted to access. An API key or an OAuth token may be used, depending on the service.
Documentation should explain whether access is required and how to provide credentials. An API key is not universal: some APIs do not require one, and access rules vary. Credentials should be handled according to the provider’s guidance rather than exposed in places where unauthorized people can use them.

When you encounter an API in everyday software
If an app setting, business tool, or AI product mentions an API, it usually means that software can connect to a defined capability through a documented interface. For example, a developer might connect an application to a service that returns data or performs an operation. The API is the agreed boundary: the client must send requests in the documented way, and the service determines what it accepts and returns.
ScreenshotNeo is one specific example: it provides a website screenshot API and an MCP server for developers. That is a use of the API concept, not a definition of APIs generally. See ScreenshotNeo for the product.
Or skip the browser setup: use a screenshot API
If your concrete goal is to capture a website rather than learn the concept by building a browser workflow, ScreenshotNeo offers a single GET request that returns an image or PDF. Its API removes known cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed. Its MCP server lets AI agents use screenshot tools. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card, and paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does every API use JSON?
No. The data format depends on the API; consult that service’s documentation.
Is an API key the same as an API?
No. An API is the interface and its rules. An API key is one possible credential a service may use to identify or control access by a caller.
