An 80% charging limit is a battery setting that caps routine charging around 80% of the displayed charge instead of filling the battery to 100%. It is intended to reduce how long the battery spends at a high charge level, which manufacturers say can help support battery longevity. The trade-off is straightforward: you have less charge available when you unplug.

What an 80% charging limit means

The setting tells a device’s charging controls to stop near a chosen maximum. It does not mean you must wait until the battery falls to 20% before charging again, or that the battery will always stop at exactly 80%. Apple says supported iPhones may finish within a few percentage points of the selected limit and can sometimes charge to 100% to keep charge estimates accurate. Google says Pixel phones with the limit enabled fully charge every tenth cycle for accurate capacity readings.

Manufacturers offer the setting because lithium-ion batteries lose capacity over complete charge cycles, and spending less time at a high state of charge is one way to manage battery wear. Apple describes its charging process as fast up to about 80%, then slower afterward; that is a charging behavior, not the same thing as a user-selected 80% maximum. See Apple’s lithium-ion battery overview.

Charge limit vs. optimized or adaptive charging

Feature What it does Charge available when you unplug
80% charge limit Caps routine charging near a selected maximum, such as 80%. Usually less than a full battery.
Optimized or adaptive charging Learns or uses a charging routine, pauses around 80% during a long connection, then completes charging toward 100% near the expected unplug time. Often a full battery when the device expects you to leave.

The first option prioritizes a lower routine maximum; the second tries to reduce time spent fully charged while still providing a full battery when needed. Apple and Google describe schedule-aware behavior in their support materials: Apple’s iPhone User Guide and Apple’s Charge Limit and Optimized Battery Charging support page.

Which devices offer an 80% limit?

iPhone 15 and later

Apple documents a selectable Charge Limit from 80% to 100% in five-percentage-point increments on iPhone 15 and later. Find it at Settings > Battery > Charging. Charging may resume if the battery loses more than five percentage points while the phone remains connected, and the phone may sometimes reach 100% to maintain accurate charge estimates. Apple’s current details are on its Charge Limit support page.

iPhone 14 and earlier

Apple documents Optimized Battery Charging for iPhone 14 and earlier, rather than the same selectable Charge Limit interface. When the feature recognizes a suitable routine, it can delay charging past 80% and finish closer to the usual unplug time. That is a timed charging strategy, not a permanent 80% cap. See Apple’s instructions for optimized charging.

Google Pixel 6a and later

Google documents the option on Pixel 6a and later at Settings > Battery > Battery health > Charging optimization. Choose Limit to 80%. Google says the option is intended for people who usually finish the day with charge remaining; with the limit enabled, the phone completes a full charge every tenth cycle to preserve accurate capacity readings. Details are in Google Pixel Help.

These are model-specific examples, not a universal list. On another phone, tablet, laptop, or vehicle, check the maker’s manual and current settings: feature availability, names, and behavior vary.

Should you turn on an 80% limit?

Use it if your normal day leaves enough battery in reserve and you are willing to trade some unplugged runtime for less routine time near a full charge. If you often need nearly all the available battery, or expect a long day away from power, raise or turn off the limit when supported. Google specifically recommends the 80% option for people who usually end the day with charge left and advises turning it off when longer battery life is needed.

There is no universal number of extra months or years that an 80% limit will add. Apple and Google explain the battery-health rationale, but their cited materials do not quantify a guaranteed lifespan gain from this setting. Actual battery wear depends on the device and how it is used, including temperature and charging patterns; Apple notes that overheating can affect charging behavior.

Why did my phone charge past 80%?

A small overshoot or an occasional full charge does not necessarily mean the feature is broken. Supported iPhones may land a few points above or below the target and sometimes reach 100% to keep charge estimates accurate. Pixel phones periodically complete a full charge every tenth cycle for the same general calibration purpose. Check your phone’s model-specific support page before treating an exception as a fault.
