A pop-up may instead be a deceptive webpage or a notification from a site you previously allowed. Start by avoiding the pop-up, then check installed apps, security alerts, browser extensions, and notification permissions.
What adware is—and what it is not
Adware is software associated with unwanted advertising. On Windows, Microsoft groups software that may show unexpected ads under potentially unwanted applications (PUA). A PUA is not necessarily malware, though its behavior may still be unwelcome. Microsoft describes PUA as software that might display unwanted ads, install other apps, or do other things you would rather it did not do: Microsoft’s explanation of PUA.
Some installers bundle extras such as toolbars or software that adds ads. This is why an app can appear alongside something you intended to install. Read each installer screen and decline optional software you do not want; do not assume every ad-supported app or every pop-up is malicious.
How to tell unwanted software from a pop-up or notification
A sudden increase in ads, repeated interruptions, or pop-ups that continue outside sites where you expect advertising can be a clue that an unwanted app or extension is involved. It is not a diagnosis. A webpage can display deceptive content, and a site can send notifications after you grant permission.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Deceptive pop-up: It may imitate Apple or another trusted company, claim you have won a prize, or urge you to download an update, plug-in, or security tool. Do not click it or use its phone number or download link. Apple’s guidance explains how to handle deceptive pop-ups: Avoid scams that use pop-up ads and alerts.
- Website notification: An alert may come from a site you previously allowed to send notifications. Review the browser’s site notification permissions and revoke access for sites you do not trust or no longer want to hear from.
- Browser extension: An add-on can affect browsing or display content. Review installed extensions and remove ones you do not recognize or need.
- Personalized advertising: Windows advertising ID can let apps personalize ads. Turning it off is a privacy choice, not an adware-removal step, and Microsoft says it does not reduce the number of ads.
Remove suspected adware on Windows 10 or Windows 11
Use Windows’ built-in controls first. Settings labels can differ slightly by release. Microsoft’s Windows Security instructions are available at Windows Security.
- Uninstall apps you do not recognize or need. Open Settings > Apps, locate the app, and choose the uninstall option. If you are unsure what an app does, look up its publisher and purpose before removing it.
- Update Defender and scan. Open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection, check for security intelligence updates, then run a full scan. If the unwanted software remains, Microsoft recommends a Microsoft Defender Offline scan.
- Act on a PUA detection. Review the detection name and select an available action in Windows Security, then start that action. A reported PUA may be blocked without being removed until you choose an action; available options vary.
- Review browser extensions. In Microsoft Edge, open Extensions and turn off or remove add-ons you do not want. Consider what permissions an extension requests before installing or keeping it. Microsoft’s Edge guidance: Manage Edge extensions.
- If the ads continue, record what Windows detected. Note the detection name and consult Microsoft or a trusted support professional. Do not install a cleanup tool promoted by an unsolicited pop-up.
Remove unwanted software or extensions on a Mac
Apple says persistent pop-ups on a Mac can indicate that adware or other unwanted software was inadvertently installed. Its recommended checks are:

- Update macOS. Install available macOS updates. If the Mac is already current, restart it; macOS includes a built-in tool that removes known malware during restart, but this is not a guarantee that every unwanted component will be removed.
- Check Applications. Review the Applications folder and uninstall apps you do not recognize or want.
- Review Safari extensions. Open Safari settings, select Extensions, and disable or uninstall add-ons you do not need.
- Get help if the problem remains. Avoid interacting with persistent pop-ups. If unwanted ads or programs continue after these checks, contact Apple. See Apple’s instructions for handling pop-ups and unwanted software.
Stop unwanted browser notifications
If alerts appear when the browser is open, the sender may be a website with permission to notify you, rather than an app installed on the computer. Open your browser’s privacy, site settings, or notifications controls; find the site in the allowed list and revoke its permission. Exact menus differ among browsers and versions. Do not follow an alert’s link if it claims your device is infected or pushes a download.
Reduce the chance of adware returning
- Get apps from the App Store, the developer’s official site, or another reliable source—not an advertisement or unsolicited link.
- On Windows, read installer screens carefully and decline optional toolbars or bundled apps you do not want.
- Keep your operating system, browser, and security software updated.
- Review extension permissions before installation and remove add-ons you no longer use.
- Where available, leave Windows potentially unwanted app protection enabled. Microsoft recommends blocking potentially unwanted apps and downloads; its download-blocking guidance for Windows 10 applies to Microsoft Edge.
What turning off Windows ad personalization changes
Windows’ advertising ID is used by apps to personalize advertising. Turning it off limits that personalization use, but Microsoft says it does not reduce the total number of ads. If your goal is to remove suspicious pop-ups, check apps, run a security scan, and review browser extensions and site notification permissions instead. See Microsoft’s advertising ID guidance.
