ACPI stands for Advanced Configuration and Power Interface. It is an industry standard that defines how a computer’s operating system, platform firmware, and hardware exchange information and controls so the OS can configure devices and manage power. ACPI is an interface specification—not a single chip, setting, or computer component.
What ACPI does
ACPI is part of Operating System-directed configuration and Power Management (OSPM). It gives the operating system standardized information about the platform and interfaces it can use to manage configuration and power policy. The OS can use those interfaces to place unused devices in lower-power states or, when appropriate, put the system into a sleeping state. The ACPI 6.6 introduction describes this relationship and the standard’s purpose.
ACPI covers more than sleep and wake controls. The UEFI Forum describes its scope as including OS-directed configuration, power and thermal management, and reliability, availability, and serviceability (RAS) features across mobile, desktop, and server platforms. The Forum’s ACPI overview provides that broader description.

A platform exposes information about itself and controls through ACPI-defined interfaces. The specification includes hardware interfaces, software interfaces, and data structures. The operating system interprets the platform information and uses available controls as part of OSPM.

ACPI tables describe the platform
Tables are one way ACPI conveys platform information to the OS. Microsoft describes ACPI as providing an extensible table-passing mechanism, along with specific tables that describe a system to the operating system. Microsoft’s ACPI system description tables documentation explains this mechanism.
Implementations can differ
ACPI standardizes interfaces, but that does not mean every computer implements every ACPI hardware feature identically. Microsoft notes that the ACPI Hardware Specification is not required on system-on-chip (SoC) platforms, although much of the ACPI Software Specification may be required. Therefore, the details available to an operating system can depend on the platform.

ACPI’s history and current version
ACPI was first released in December 1996 and was originally developed by Intel, Microsoft, and Toshiba. The UEFI Forum added ACPI to its portfolio in October 2013 and leads its future development. The Forum’s ACPI overview summarizes that history.
As of October 2026, the UEFI Forum specifications index lists ACPI Specification 6.6, released in May 2025, as the latest version. Because the listing may change, check the UEFI Forum specifications index for the current version.
