A YouTube thumbnail is the preview image viewers see before they open a video. It works with the video’s title to give a quick visual idea of what to expect and help people decide whether to watch. YouTube may suggest a frame from the video, or eligible creators can upload a custom image in YouTube Studio.

What a YouTube thumbnail does

A thumbnail is the visual preview attached to a YouTube video. It is not the video itself, and it does not determine what the video contains. Its job is to help viewers recognize the subject and understand the video’s promise before they press play.

Viewers usually encounter the thumbnail alongside the title. Together, those elements provide a compact pitch: the title explains the topic in words, while the image makes the subject, mood, or central idea easier to grasp at a glance. YouTube describes thumbnails as billboards that help viewers decide whether to watch.

Thumbnails can appear in search results, on channel pages, in recommendations beside a video, and after playback, among other discovery surfaces. Their dimensions and crops can vary across devices and placements, so an image that looks clear on a large monitor may be difficult to read as a small phone feed card.

How YouTube thumbnails work

  1. YouTube can suggest a frame. When a creator uploads a video, YouTube may offer still images taken from it as thumbnail options.
  2. The creator selects or uploads an image. A creator can use a suggested frame or, if the account is eligible, upload a custom thumbnail through YouTube Studio.
  3. YouTube shows the image with the video. The selected preview appears on discovery and viewing surfaces alongside the title. The appearance can vary by device, placement, and video orientation.
  4. The creator reviews performance. YouTube Analytics helps creators assess how viewers respond. YouTube points creators to click-through rate (CTR) on Home and Suggested, particularly during the first 24 hours after publication, when comparing thumbnail approaches.

CTR is one signal, not a universal score to chase. YouTube does not provide a dated universal benchmark in the cited guidance. A thumbnail should attract the right viewers and accurately represent the video; a high click rate is not useful if the image sets an expectation the video fails to meet.

Recommended YouTube thumbnail size and file limits

YouTube’s current recommendations differ for regular videos and Shorts. The upload-size limit also depends on the content type and whether the upload is made on mobile or desktop.

Content Recommended dimensions Aspect ratio Minimum dimension Supported formats and upload limit
Regular video 3840 × 2160 pixels 16:9 640 pixels wide JPG or PNG. Up to 2 MB on mobile or 50 MB on desktop.
Short 2160 × 3840 pixels 9:16 640 pixels high JPG or PNG. Up to 50 MB on desktop.
Podcast thumbnail Use the dimensions and aspect ratio required for the relevant thumbnail placement. Depends on placement Not stated Up to 50 MB on desktop or 10 MB on mobile.

The podcast limits above are file-size limits, not recommendations for image dimensions. The cited guidance gives those limits but does not specify a podcast-specific pixel size here. If you upload from a phone, check the mobile limit for the content type: regular video thumbnails have a 2 MB limit, while mobile podcast thumbnails have a 10 MB limit.

Why dimensions and aspect ratio matter

Aspect ratio is the relationship between an image’s width and height. A 16:9 image is wide, while a 9:16 image is vertical. Designing in the recommended ratio helps the composition fit the intended video format, but it does not guarantee that every YouTube surface will display the whole image without a crop or alternate treatment.

There is an important exception for vertical videos: YouTube may replace a 16:9 custom image with an automatically generated 4:5 thumbnail on Home, Explore, and subscription pages. The custom image may still appear in the watch feed, watch history, and on non-mobile platforms. Check how the preview looks in the places your audience is likely to encounter it rather than judging only the uploaded file.

Can you make your own thumbnail?

Yes. If your account is eligible and verified, YouTube lets you upload a custom thumbnail in YouTube Studio. A custom design gives you control over the image and composition; a suggested frame is a simpler option when one of YouTube’s selections represents the video well.

Custom thumbnails must comply with YouTube’s Community Guidelines. YouTube identifies nudity or sexually provocative content, hate speech, violence, and harmful or dangerous content as examples that may lead to rejection or enforcement. Eligibility, daily upload limits, and available features can depend on the account, channel history, strikes, country, or region.

Adding or changing a thumbnail for a video

  1. Open YouTube Studio and choose the video you want to edit.
  2. In the video’s details, locate its thumbnail options. Depending on eligibility, choose a suggested frame or select the option to upload a custom image.
  3. Select an image file that meets the applicable format and file-size limit. For a regular video, YouTube recommends 3840 × 2160 pixels, a 16:9 ratio, and JPG or PNG.
  4. Save the video details. Then check the thumbnail at small display sizes and on the surfaces where it appears.

Adding a thumbnail to a Short

YouTube’s feature availability for Shorts has been changing. In an announcement dated July 24, 2026, YouTube said creators in the YouTube Partner Program could begin uploading custom thumbnails for Shorts, with expansion planned over time. The announcement also described Ask Studio as a way to generate thumbnail suggestions for long-form videos and revise elements conversationally. Eligibility and rollout can change, so check the current Studio interface and account eligibility before planning a workflow around either feature.

For a Short thumbnail, YouTube recommends a 9:16 image measuring 2160 × 3840 pixels, with a minimum height of 640 pixels; JPG and PNG are supported. The cited announcement does not establish that custom Shorts thumbnails are available to every creator.

How to design a thumbnail people can understand

Design for the smallest likely display, not just the full-size canvas. A clear subject, legible text, and strong separation between foreground and background are more useful than fine decorative detail that disappears when the image is reduced.

  • Make the subject obvious. Use an image that lets viewers identify the person, object, or idea central to the video.
  • Keep the composition simple. A viewer should not need to inspect several small elements to understand the visual point.
  • Use readable text sparingly. If words add useful context, make them large enough to survive a small feed display. The title already carries the video’s wording, so the image does not need to repeat it all.
  • Create contrast. Make the subject stand apart from its background so the image remains recognizable at reduced size and among neighboring videos.
  • Match the video’s actual content. A dramatic image that promises something the video does not deliver can mislead viewers and harm engagement over time.
  • Check policy compliance. Make sure the image follows YouTube’s rules, particularly when it depicts sensitive or potentially harmful material.

Compare thumbnail options with a practical checklist

If you have more than one candidate, compare them against the same criteria instead of choosing only the most dramatic image.

  • Does the image accurately represent the video’s promise?
  • Can a viewer understand its main subject at feed size?
  • Is the subject or emotional point clear?
  • Does the image stand apart from its background and nearby content?
  • Does it comply with YouTube’s policies?
  • How does it perform on Home and Suggested, and does the viewer response remain consistent with the video itself?

Use your own Analytics to inform revisions rather than treating a particular CTR as a target for every channel or topic. YouTube states that 90% of its best-performing videos have custom thumbnails, but its guidance does not date that figure. It is not a prediction that adding a custom thumbnail will improve any particular video’s performance.

Why a YouTube thumbnail may not show

A missing or unexpected thumbnail can result from eligibility, the selected image, the upload, or the way YouTube presents a video on a particular surface. Use these checks to narrow down the cause.

The custom-thumbnail option is missing

Check whether the account is eligible and verified. Custom thumbnail access is not established for every account, and daily upload limits can vary by country, region, channel history, and strikes. For Shorts, availability may also depend on the feature rollout and YouTube Partner Program eligibility described in YouTube’s July 24, 2026 announcement. Check the current Studio interface for the account you are using.

The image will not upload

Confirm that the file is JPG or PNG and below the limit for the content type and upload device. A regular video thumbnail uploaded on mobile has a 2 MB limit; desktop regular-video thumbnails have a 50 MB limit. Shorts and desktop podcast thumbnails have a 50 MB limit, while mobile podcast thumbnails have a 10 MB limit. If the image exceeds the applicable limit, export a smaller file while keeping the subject legible.

YouTube rejects the image or takes action

Review the image for potential Community Guidelines issues. YouTube lists sexually provocative nudity, hate speech, violence, and harmful or dangerous content as examples that can lead to rejection or enforcement. Rework the image to comply before trying again.

The image looks different on a phone or a particular page

Thumbnail appearance can vary across surfaces and devices. For vertical videos, a 16:9 custom image may be replaced by an automatically generated 4:5 thumbnail on Home, Explore, and subscription pages, even though the custom image can still appear in the watch feed, watch history, and non-mobile platforms. Check the specific placement rather than assuming that one view represents every surface.

The thumbnail appears but gets few clicks

CTR depends on the audience and the context in which people see the video; the cited YouTube guidance does not set a universal target. Review Home and Suggested CTR in Analytics, especially in the first 24 hours after publication, and compare candidate images on clarity and accuracy. If viewers click but the image overpromises, revise it to better reflect the actual video rather than optimizing for clicks alone.

If you need a clean screenshot of a published video page for a review, report, or page preview, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. It captures web pages; it does not create, upload, or optimize YouTube thumbnail images. For a thumbnail workflow, use YouTube Studio and an image file as described above.

For a page screenshot, one GET request returns an image or PDF. For example, this cURL request captures a page as WebP; replace the target URL with the page you need to capture.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a thumbnail and a video frame?

A video frame is an image within the video. YouTube may suggest one as a preview, but a thumbnail is the image selected or uploaded to represent the video before playback.

Does a custom thumbnail guarantee more views?

No. A custom image gives you control over the preview, but performance depends on the video, audience, and context. Use your own Analytics to assess results.
