A virtual retinal display (VRD), also called a retinal-scanning display, forms an image by scanning modulated light directly onto the viewer’s retina. Unlike a conventional display, it does not first create the image on a physical screen for the eye to view.
What is a virtual retinal display?
A VRD uses a scanned light beam to create a perceived image on the retina. The term describes the image-forming method, not every head-mounted display: many headsets show an image on a small screen or other optical surface that the viewer looks at.
The University of Washington Human Interface Technology Laboratory says the VRD concept was invented there in 1991 and describes work to expand the exit pupil of a monochrome display, making eye alignment easier. How does a retinal-scanning display work?
In the foundational implementation described by Pryor, Furness, and Viirre, video signals control light sources, and optical components combine and direct the light toward the eye. Scanning elements move the beam across the retina in two dimensions, tracing a raster. The beam’s intensity is modulated to form the image the viewer perceives.

This is analogous to raster scanning in a television, but the image-forming target differs: a conventional display draws a raster on a physical screen, while a retinal-scanning display scans light over the retina. What are its potential benefits and limitations?
The 1998 paper discusses possible advantages over earlier head-coupled displays, including higher resolution, luminance, and field of view. A review also describes high brightness, wide color gamut, and high resolution as possibilities. These are potential advantages, not guaranteed features of every VRD or retinal-projection product.

The same 1998 paper reports developmental models with VGA and SVGA image quality. Those are results for early prototypes, not specifications for current devices. Pryor, Furness, and Viirre (1998)
What does the safety evidence establish?
A 1997 safety analysis calculated maximum permissible exposure levels for normal viewing and possible failure modes, then compared them with measured power entering the eye. Its abstract reports that the system studied was safe under those conditions. That finding applies to the analyzed system and conditions; it does not establish the safety of every retinal display, product, use situation, or failure mode. Are retinal-scanning displays available as products?
Manufacturer information documents examples of retinal projection products, but the cited sources do not provide a complete, independently comparable current market survey or confirm current inventory for every item.
RETISSA VIEWCLEAR
QD Laser describes RETISSA VIEWCLEAR as a retinal projection accessory. Its product information says it works with USB-C devices that support DisplayPort Alternate Mode, and its purchase page describes made-to-order sales. That announcement documents a historical US launch, not current inventory.
