A video player is software or a device capability that reads a video file or stream, separates its audio and video tracks, decodes them, and presents picture and sound in sync. Play, pause, seek, and volume controls sit on top of that process. Streaming is one way media reaches a player; playback is the full process of turning that media into something you can watch and hear.
How a video player turns media into picture and sound
Playback is a chain of steps. A local file, remote file, or internet stream supplies the media; the player interprets its structure, decodes its tracks, and schedules the result for display and audio output. Apple describes playback assets as local, remote, or delivered using HLS (Apple Developer: Video).
- Get the media. The player reads data from a file or obtains it over a network. In streamed playback, data may arrive in pieces rather than as one complete file.
- Parse the container. Formats such as MP4, WebM, and MKV organize tracks and metadata. The player reads that structure and extracts encoded media chunks, a process called demuxing.
- Decode the tracks. A decoder reconstructs video and audio from their compressed forms. Those tracks may use different codecs even when they are in the same file.
- Synchronize and present. Timestamps tell the player when video frames belong on the timeline. It schedules the frames and audio so they play as one program. Video is a sequence of timestamped images shown in rapid succession.
- Respond to controls. Pause stops presentation, volume changes audio output, and seeking asks playback to resume at another point. The player may need to start decoding at an earlier key frame and work forward because later frames can depend on earlier ones.
Some devices use dedicated hardware to accelerate decoding. Whether that is available depends on the codec and device; playback can also rely on software. The details of these media-processing steps are explained by MDN Web Docs.
Container, codec, and streaming protocol are different things
These terms describe separate parts of playback, and confusing them can make an otherwise compatible-looking file fail to play.

| Term | What it describes | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| Container | The structure that holds tracks and metadata. | MP4, WebM, MKV |
| Codec | The method used to compress and reconstruct a particular media track. | H.264, HEVC/H.265, VP9, AV1 for video |
| Streaming protocol or delivery format | Rules for describing, requesting, and delivering media over a network. | HLS, MPEG-DASH |
For example, an MP4 can contain a video track and an audio track encoded with different codecs. The extension identifies the container, not every detail a player needs to know. HLS and DASH describe delivery approaches; neither is a video codec. MPEG describes DASH as a standards suite for multimedia delivery over existing HTTP infrastructure (MPEG-DASH overview).
What changes when you stream video?
For a local or progressive file, the player reads media data from the file or remote resource and decodes it as playback proceeds. Segmented streaming adds a playlist or manifest that describes media pieces and, often, multiple available versions of the program. The player requests segments, buffers data, and presents it as it arrives.

Adaptive streaming and quality changes
HLS can provide multiple renditions at different resolutions and bitrates. The player can use playlist information—including bandwidth, resolution, and codec—to choose a rendition suited to the device and measured network conditions, and may switch during playback. That is a selection process, not a guarantee of uninterrupted playback: available renditions, the network, and the player’s implementation all affect the result. Apple’s HLS guide describes playlists, segments, and variant selection.
HLS, DASH, and compatibility
MPEG-DASH supports both on-demand and live delivery over HTTP infrastructure. HLS and DASH are not automatically interchangeable: a player must support the delivery method, media packaging, codecs, and any content-protection requirements involved. The Google Cast protocol documentation gives examples of protocols supported by receivers; capabilities vary by implementation.

Browser playback also depends on the browser and the stream. Some web players use Media Source Extensions (MSE), which allow JavaScript to supply media data to a browser video element. Browser support changes over time, so an older overview such as web.dev’s media streaming guide is useful for the concepts, not a definitive compatibility list for every current browser.
Why codecs matter: compressed video versus raw frames
Uncompressed video is exceptionally large. MDN Web Docs contributors give illustrative figures of approximately 25 MB for a single uncompressed 4K frame and more than 3 TB for one hour of uncompressed 4K video at 30 frames per second. These are technical illustrations, not the expected sizes of ordinary compressed video files. MDN describes codec compression as commonly reducing video data by one to two orders of magnitude, or a factor of 100 or more as a general estimate—not a guarantee for any particular encoding. See MDN’s video processing concepts (page last modified May 15, 2026).

Why a video may not play even when its extension looks right
A file extension alone does not guarantee compatibility. A player must be able to parse the container, decode the particular audio and video codecs, and support the delivery method if the media is streamed. Device, browser, operating-system, app, receiver, hardware, and content-protection support can all matter.
- Container mismatch: the player may not recognize the file structure.
- Codec mismatch: the container may open, but the player may not decode one of its tracks.
- Streaming mismatch: the app or device may not support the stream’s protocol or packaging.
- Insufficient delivery conditions: a stream may stall if data does not arrive quickly enough for its buffer or available rendition.
When diagnosing a problem, identify the actual container, codecs, and delivery format rather than relying only on the filename. Platform capabilities differ; Apple’s video overview and the dated browser discussion in web.dev’s guide illustrate why support should be checked for the particular player and device.
