A video encoder compresses video into a stream a platform can receive. If you stream from a computer, software such as OBS can encode it using your CPU or a supported GPU’s hardware encoder—you usually do not need to buy a separate encoder box. A dedicated appliance may suit a specialized production setup, but first check what your existing computer and streaming software can do.

What a video encoder does

A camera, game, screen capture, or other video source must be prepared in a format a streaming service can ingest. An encoder compresses the video using a codec and applies output settings such as resolution, frame rate, and bitrate. Streaming software may also combine video, audio, scenes, and other sources before sending the encoded stream to the service. OBS’s setup guide covers service selection, stream-key entry, output bitrate, and video settings.

  • Encoder: The software or hardware doing the compression.
  • Codec: The format used to encode the video, such as H.264.
  • Hardware encoder: A dedicated encoding component, commonly built into a supported GPU. This is different from a separate encoder appliance.

In a typical computer setup, encoding happens in software on the computer or on a supported hardware component inside it. “You need an encoder” often means that the stream needs to be encoded—not that you must purchase a separate device.

Software or hardware encoding: which should you use?

OBS includes the x264 software encoder. It can also use supported GPU hardware encoders, which use a specialized component to take encoding work off the CPU. That can reduce CPU load, but the whole stream still uses system resources, and encoder generation and settings affect image quality. OBS notes that earlier-generation hardware encoders may produce lower quality at the same bitrate than x264’s default veryfast preset. There is no universal winner independent of your hardware, settings, and workload. OBS explains the hardware-encoding tradeoffs.

Option Where encoding happens Practical consideration
Software encoding (x264 in OBS) The computer’s CPU Uses CPU resources; quality and performance depend on the settings and what else the computer is doing.
Hardware encoding A supported encoding component in the GPU Can offload encoding from the CPU. Support and results vary by hardware generation, software, and platform.

A computer’s listed system requirements do not guarantee it can handle every stream. Resolution, frame rate, encoder, game or application load, and scene complexity all affect performance. OBS’s system requirements guidance recommends using its Auto Configuration Wizard as a starting point; test the resulting setup under realistic conditions.

Do you need a separate encoder device?

For ordinary computer-based streaming, start with the encoding options already available in your streaming software and computer. In OBS, choose your service, enter its stream key, configure output, then check resolution and frame rate in the video settings. A separate appliance is not an automatic requirement just because a guide uses the word “encoder.”

A dedicated device or additional capture hardware may make sense when a particular workflow needs to handle external video sources, multiple cameras, or standalone production. Choose hardware to solve a specific source, portability, reliability, or workflow constraint—not simply because streaming requires encoding. The right choice depends on the sources and workflow you actually have.

Which settings matter for a YouTube live stream?

Encoder settings depend on the destination platform. YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 for live ingest and recommends RTMPS, a secure extension of RTMP. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval, with a maximum interval of four seconds.

Use YouTube’s published bitrate recommendations for the codec, resolution, and frame rate you select. For example, its guidance recommends 17 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p and 60 fps, and 12 Mbps for AV1 or H.265 at the same resolution and frame rate. These are YouTube recommendations, not universal settings for other services. Check YouTube’s current table for the complete set of combinations.

Choose a quality your internet connection can sustain. YouTube recommends checking upload speed and testing with audio and motion representative of the actual stream, then monitoring stream health. YouTube transcodes the incoming stream into multiple formats for viewers, so your encoder sends an ingest stream rather than a separate output for every viewer.

For local recordings, codec and container priorities can differ from live streaming. OBS describes H.264 as broadly compatible and its default codec, while noting that support for HEVC and AV1 varies and that real-time software encoding of AV1 may require high-end CPUs. A format suitable for saving a recording is not automatically accepted or best for live ingest; confirm platform support and hardware capability first. See the OBS audio and video formats guide.

Test before going live

  1. Set up the destination: In OBS, select the streaming service or server and enter the stream key supplied by that service. Treat the key as a credential; do not share or publish it. See the OBS overview guide for the setup flow.
  2. Choose an encoder and output: Select software or supported hardware encoding, then set a platform-compatible codec, bitrate, resolution, frame rate, CBR, and keyframe interval. For YouTube, use its current encoder settings guidance rather than assuming another service’s recommendations apply.
  3. Run a representative test: Include the audio, motion, scenes, and sources you expect to use. A quiet desktop test may not reveal the load of a game, animated scene, filters, or browser sources.
  4. Check stream health and system load: Look for encoder overload or choppy output, and distinguish a system performance problem from a connection or platform issue.
  5. Adjust one demanding factor at a time: If performance is overloaded, lower output resolution or frame rate, simplify demanding scenes or filters, or reduce competing GPU work. If 60 fps is unstable, try 30 fps. Test again after each meaningful change.

OBS recommends testing configured scenes and settings before the first live stream. Its encoding performance troubleshooting guide discusses GPU overload and ways to reduce rendering and encoding load.

Common problems and what to try

  • Encoder overload or choppy output: The computer may be struggling with encoding, rendering, or the combined scene workload. Reduce resolution or frame rate, simplify scenes and filters, and retest. Switching to a supported hardware encoder may reduce CPU pressure, but it does not eliminate all system load.
  • Good computer specifications, poor stream performance: Requirements vary with encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. Use the Auto Configuration Wizard for a starting point, then test the actual scene and workload rather than relying on a compatibility label alone.
  • The selected codec or encoder is unavailable: Compatibility depends on the software, operating system, hardware generation, and destination. Select a codec and encoder supported by both your setup and the streaming platform.
  • Unstable stream despite manageable system load: Check whether the chosen bitrate is sustainable on your upload connection. YouTube advises running an upload speed test, choosing a reliable quality, and monitoring stream health.
  • Local recording works, but live ingest does not: Recording and streaming have different format requirements. Confirm the service accepts the selected live codec and settings rather than assuming a recording preset is appropriate.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the goal is to keep a YouTube channel live with uploaded video rather than stream a live camera or computer session, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Your computer does not have to stay on at home. Each slot streams uploaded video at its original quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. The Monthly price is $9.99 per month. Start your free StreamNeo day.
