A USB Type-A-to-Type-B cable has a Type-A plug on one end and a Type-B plug on the other. It commonly connects a computer or hub to a peripheral such as a printer, but check the ports on both devices: connector names identify their shapes, not the cable’s speed or charging capability.

What Type A and Type B mean

  • USB Type-A is the familiar rectangular connector used on many computers and hubs.
  • USB Type-B is a squarish connector commonly found on legacy peripherals, including printers and scanners.
  • A-to-B means the cable has one Type-A plug and one Type-B plug. In the usual setup, the A end connects to the host and the B end to the peripheral.

USB-IF’s USB 2.0 specification listing and its USB 2.0 cable and connector document describe USB connector and cable requirements; the latter document listing is dated August 1, 2007, and the USB 2.0 specification listing is dated June 3, 2025.

How to tell whether you need one

  1. Identify the port on the host device, such as a computer, and the receptacle on the peripheral.
  2. Check that one device accepts Type-A and the other accepts the correct Type-B variant. Standard-B, Mini-B, and Micro-B are different connector shapes; the device’s port determines which one fits.
  3. Check the data-rate and power requirements separately. The connector shape alone does not establish either.

A printer often uses a Type-B port, but device categories are not a reliable substitute for checking the actual receptacle.

If the host has USB Type-C

A Type-A-to-Type-B cable will not plug directly into a Type-C-only host. For a Type-C host and a legacy device with a Standard-B port, USB-IF’s Type-C specification defines Type-C-to-legacy-Standard-B cable assemblies, including a USB 2.0 Type-C-to-Standard-B cable for connecting a Type-C host to compatible legacy USB 2.0 hubs and devices. Choose a cable made for the actual host and device combination rather than assuming an arbitrary adapter will work; the specification cautions against undefined Type-C-receptacle-to-legacy adapters.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Type-C plugs do not physically use the A-versus-B distinction. The USB connection still has a logical host and device relationship, established through the Configuration Channel described in the Type-C specification.

What the cable name does not tell you

“A-to-B” identifies the connector ends. By itself, it does not state the USB generation, data rate, charging performance, power rating, or cable length. Check the cable’s specifications against what the connected devices require; USB-IF distinguishes, for example, full-featured Type-C cables from USB 2.0-only cable assemblies.
