It fits in only one orientation. The shape identifies the connector, but it does not tell you the USB speed, charging capability, or cable compatibility. “Type A” can also mean something else in other industries, so this definition applies specifically to USB.
How to identify a USB-A connector
USB-A has a rectangular shape and a keyed design, which means it is not reversible like USB-C. If it does not fit one way, turn the plug over; do not force it.
USB-A ports are commonly found on host devices and used to connect peripherals such as keyboards, mice, flash drives, external drives, printers, and scanners. A port’s location or shape alone does not establish its data or power capabilities.
What USB-A does—and does not—tell you
USB-A is a connector type used across multiple USB generations. The connector shape alone does not identify a particular data-transfer rate, power level, or charging feature. Check the specifications for the host, peripheral, and cable when those capabilities matter.

The European Commission’s 2021 staff working document makes the same distinction for USB-C: having a particular connector does not by itself guarantee features such as USB 3.1, USB Power Delivery, or an Alternate Mode. That is a useful reminder to verify capabilities rather than infer them from a plug’s appearance. European Commission staff working document.
Choosing a USB-A cable
Start by checking the ports on both devices. A cable described as USB-A must have a USB-A connector at one end, but its other end could be a different connector, such as USB-C or Micro-USB. Choose that end to match the peripheral, then verify that the cable and both devices support the data or power features you need. “USB-A cable” by itself is not enough to establish compatibility.

“A-device” is a separate term used in the USB On-The-Go context. The MicroUSB Specification, Revision 1.01 (April 4, 2007), states: “The A-device supplies power to VBUS and is host at the start of a session.” It also describes circumstances in which an On-The-Go A-device may relinquish the host role to an On-The-Go B-device. This historical, Micro-USB-specific definition should not be treated as a universal description of every modern USB-A connection. MicroUSB Specification, Revision 1.01.
