It is used at the vehicle inlet; its contacts carry power, protective earth, and control signals. The term also has a separate meaning in data cabling, so “EV Type 1” or “J1772” is the clearest wording when discussing car charging.
What a Type 1 EV connector does
Type 1 is the vehicle-side AC charging interface commonly identified with SAE J1772. ABB’s 2013 guide describes the connector under IEC 62196-2 and identifies five poles: two active conductors, one protective-earth pole, and two auxiliary poles used for control functions. A catalog hosted by element14 likewise describes three larger power/ground contacts and two smaller communication contacts.
It is designed for single-phase AC charging. The connector’s shape identifies an interface, not the charging rate a particular car will receive: the vehicle, charging equipment, cable ratings, and available electrical supply all affect delivered power.
How much power can Type 1 deliver?
ABB’s 2013 guide gives 32 A at 230 V, equivalent to 7.4 kW, as a Type 1 single-phase example. A footnote reports an 80 A at 240 V (19.2 kW) US use case. These are source-specific equipment/configuration examples, not guaranteed rates for every Type 1 vehicle or charging setup. Check the ratings of the car, cable, charging station, and supply before relying on a power figure.

Type 1 and Type 2 compared

ABB’s guide contrasts Type 2’s additional contacts and three-phase use at 400 V with Type 1’s single-phase design. A Type 2-capable station does not make a Type 1 vehicle charge on three phases.
How to check cable compatibility
Compatibility depends on the complete connection, not just the name of the car connector. Type 1-to-Type 2 cables are among the configurations described in the Molex catalog hosted by element14, but that does not make every cable suitable for every vehicle or station.

- Identify the inlet on the vehicle and the outlet on the charging station. Confirm which end of the cable must match each.
- Check the cable’s connector types and current/power ratings against the vehicle, station, and electrical supply.
- Confirm any adapter or cable is explicitly suitable for the intended combination; do not infer compatibility from a Type 1 label alone.
“Type 1 connector” can mean something else
Outside EV charging, IEC 63171-1:2024 uses “Type 1” for a copper LC-style connector for balanced single-pair data transmission. The IEC catalog listing describes that separate connector as supporting frequencies up to 600 MHz and current up to 2.0 A at 60 °C. Those specifications do not apply to the EV charging connector. When searching or specifying a product, include “EV,” “J1772,” or “IEC 62196-2” to make the intended connector clear.
