Twitter is now called X, and its current help documentation calls each update a post. An X thread is a series of connected posts from one person. You use several separate posts when one 280-character post cannot contain the explanation, steps, story, or update you want to share.

This guide explains how threads work, how to publish one in the X mobile app or on X.com, how to continue an existing thread, and what to check when the thread controls do not appear.

What is a Twitter thread?

A Twitter thread—called an X thread in current terminology—is a series of connected posts from one account. Each item is still an individual post; a thread is not one post with an unlimited text field.

On a standard account, each post can contain up to 280 characters. You can connect multiple posts so readers can follow a longer explanation in sequence. For example, a thread might contain:

  • An introduction that explains the subject
  • Several posts containing the main points or instructions
  • Examples, screenshots, links, or supporting evidence
  • A final summary or call to action

X displays connected posts together in several places. A thread with two or three posts generally appears with a connecting line in Home and profile timelines. Threads with four or more posts are truncated and show Show this thread; readers select that option to expand the rest.

Individual posts from a thread can still be shared. If someone sends one by Direct Message, reposts it, or Quote posts it, readers can select Show this thread to open the connected posts.

How to create a thread in the X mobile app

  1. Open the X app and tap the compose icon to start a new post.
  2. Write the first post. On a standard account, keep it within 280 characters.
  3. Tap the highlighted plus (+) icon. X adds another post to the thread composer.
  4. Enter the next part of your thread.
  5. Continue tapping the plus icon and adding posts until the draft is complete.
  6. Review each post, then tap Post all to publish the thread.

The plus icon becomes highlighted after you enter text in the current post. If it is not highlighted, type something in that post first.

Remove or edit a post before publishing

Before you publish, you can remove an individual item by tapping its gray delete icon. To delete the entire draft thread, tap the blue delete icon. If one post exceeds its character limit, X highlights the excess text so you can shorten or edit it before publication.

Save a thread draft in the mobile app

X’s thread instructions also allow a thread to be saved as a draft by tapping the delete icon. The wording can seem confusing because the same area includes controls for deleting posts and saving the draft. Saved thread drafts display the number of posts they contain. Tap View (number of) posts to review or edit the thread later.

How to create a thread on X.com

  1. Sign in to X.com.
  2. Click the Post button to open the composer.
  3. Enter the first post.
  4. Click the highlighted plus (+) icon to add another post.
  5. Write the next post and repeat the process for additional posts.
  6. When the thread is ready, click Post all.

On the web composer, X identifies the control for removing an individual item as the delete button. Check every post before selecting Post all, particularly if you have included links, mentions, or media.

How to add a post to an existing thread

You can continue your own thread after publishing it. X provides different routes depending on whether you want to add to the most recent post or attach a post to an earlier point.

Continue from the mobile composer

  1. Open the mobile post composer.
  2. Pull down on the compose window.
  3. Tap Continue Thread.
  4. Tap To your last post.
  5. Write the new content.
  6. Tap Post.

To add a post to an earlier item, use the composer control labeled Select another post, choose the post you want to extend, and publish the addition.

Add a post from the thread detail page

Open the published thread and go to its detail page. If you are the thread author, you can select Add another post. This prompt is visible only to the author, so it will not appear when you view somebody else’s thread.

Character, link, and media limits

Item Current limit or behavior
Standard post Up to 280 characters
URL on X.com Counts as 23 characters, regardless of the URL’s actual length
Media in one post Up to four total photos, a GIF, or a video
X Premium longer post Up to 25,000 characters in one post

X converts posted URLs through its t.co link service. As a result, a long web address does not consume its full visible length in the character counter; X counts the URL as 23 characters on X.com.

X Premium subscribers can create a single longer post of up to 25,000 characters. Other users can read those posts, but only Premium subscribers can create them. A longer post is different from a thread: it is one extended post rather than several connected standard posts.

Should you use a thread or a longer post?

Use a thread when the information benefits from separate, easy-to-share steps or when you want readers to respond to particular points. Threads also work well for chronological updates, tutorials, explanations, and multi-part commentary.

A longer post may be more suitable when the content should remain in one uninterrupted block and you have X Premium. It does not provide the same sequence of separate posts, and X currently does not allow longer posts to be saved as drafts or scheduled on the web.

Can you schedule an X thread?

X documents scheduling for a normal post on X.com, but its official thread instructions specify publishing with Post all and do not document a thread-level scheduling workflow. Therefore, do not assume that choosing a date and time for an ordinary post will schedule an entire thread.

For a normal post on X.com, close the composer with the X icon in the upper-left corner and select Save to save a draft. To schedule that normal post, select the calendar icon at the bottom of the compose box, choose a date and time, and select Confirm. Drafts and scheduled posts are available through Unsent posts in the post composer. These instructions should not be treated as an officially documented way to schedule a complete thread.

What to check before posting your first thread

  1. Give the first post a clear purpose. Tell readers what they will learn, see, or follow.
  2. Keep each post understandable. A reader may encounter a single post through a repost or Quote post.
  3. Leave room for links. A URL counts as 23 characters, even when the visible address is shorter or longer.
  4. Use a logical order. Numbering posts can help readers recognize the sequence, although X already connects posts in a thread.
  5. Check media placement. Each post can contain up to four total media items, so attach images or video to the post where they are relevant.
  6. Proofread before Post all. Review names, links, figures, and the order of posts before publishing the complete thread.

Why can’t I add another post?

The plus icon is not highlighted

Enter text in the current post. According to X’s official thread workflow, the plus icon becomes highlighted after text has been entered. If you have only opened the composer, there may be nothing available to add to the thread yet.

A post is over the character limit

Shorten the highlighted excess text. On a standard account, the limit is 280 characters per post. Move the remaining text into the next post rather than trying to publish the overlong item.

You have reached an account action limit

X limits apply across web, mobile, phone, API, and other clients; switching devices does not create a separate allowance. The current limits page lists, for unverified accounts, 50 original posts per day and 200 replies per day. X may divide these into smaller half-hour limits and may temporarily reduce them during heavy usage.

If X says you have reached a time-based posting limit, wait until the stated limit period ends and try again. A frequently repeated figure of 2,400 updates per day should not be treated as the current standalone limit: it appears elsewhere on X’s limits page and conflicts with the page’s current limits section.

You are using Media Studio

Media Studio does not support creating a thread with multiple posts. Use the regular X mobile composer or the Post composer on X.com instead.

Best length for a first thread

There is no required number of posts. Make the thread as long as the subject requires, then stop. A short sequence of three posts may be enough for a quick explanation; a tutorial may need more. Remember that threads of four or more posts are truncated in timelines and require readers to select Show this thread, so make the opening post useful enough to earn that click.

The practical test is simple: each post should add a distinct point, example, or step. If the next post merely repeats the previous one, combine or remove it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I make a thread on X?

Open the post composer, enter text, select the highlighted plus icon to add another post, repeat as needed, and select Post all.

Can I add to a thread after posting it?

Yes. From the mobile composer, choose Continue Thread and To your last post. You can also select another post to extend an earlier item, or open your thread and choose Add another post from its detail page.

Why is the plus icon unavailable on X?

The plus icon becomes highlighted after you enter text in the current post. Type content first, then try the plus icon again.

How many characters can an X thread contain?

There is no single thread-wide character limit described here. Each standard post supports up to 280 characters. The total length depends on how many connected posts you publish.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I schedule a complete X thread?

X documents scheduling for normal posts, but its official thread instructions do not document a thread-level scheduling workflow. Do not assume that scheduling one normal post schedules all posts in a thread.

Can Media Studio create an X thread?

No. X’s Media Studio FAQ says Media Studio cannot create a thread with multiple posts.

The Bottom Line

A Twitter thread is now an X thread: several separate, connected posts published as one sequence. Start in the regular mobile or web composer, enter the first post, use the highlighted plus icon to add more, review the character and media limits, and select Post all. If you need to continue the thread later, use Continue Thread or Add another post from the thread detail page.
