A system-level cache is a cache that operates at or below the operating-system or hardware layer, keeping data or metadata so later access can be served more efficiently. The phrase is an umbrella term, not the name of one standardized component: it may refer to CPU caches, an operating system’s file-data cache, or a storage-layer cache. The intended layer matters because each caches different information and behaves differently.

What does a system-level cache do?

A cache retains a copy of data or metadata that can be used to avoid repeating a more expensive operation, such as retrieving file data from storage. In the examples covered here, the cache improves access to data held in an underlying system; it is not a replacement for the authoritative backing store.

Linux kernel documentation describes the page cache as “the primary way that the user and the rest of the kernel interact with filesystems.” That description applies to Linux, not necessarily to every operating system or to every use of the phrase “system-level cache.” Linux kernel documentation: Page Cache, version 6.9

Which layer is being cached?

The term can point to several distinct mechanisms. Identify the layer before drawing conclusions about what is stored or how the cache affects performance.

Cache layer What it retains How to distinguish it
CPU cache Data used near the processor. A hardware-level cache; the term alone does not specify its design or hierarchy.
Translation lookaside buffer (TLB) Virtual-to-physical address translations derived from software page tables. A CPU cache for address translations, not a cache of file contents. Linux kernel documentation: TLB
Operating-system page cache File data held in physical memory. Linux file reads, writes, and memory mappings generally use it; O_DIRECT is an example of a path that can bypass it. Linux kernel documentation: Page Cache, version 6.9
Storage or block-device cache Data migrated from a larger, slower origin device to a smaller, faster cache device. Linux dm-cache provides configurable write modes as well as read caching. Linux kernel documentation: dm-cache
Filesystem caching framework Cached filesystem data, including data associated with network filesystems. Linux provides interfaces for cache backends, management, and invalidation. Linux kernel documentation: Filesystem Caching

How the Linux page cache works

Reads

When file data is read from storage, Linux places it in the page cache. A later read can use the cached copy instead of accessing storage again, when that copy is available and applicable. Linux kernel documentation: Page Cache, version 6.9

Writes

Linux writes enter the page cache and are eventually sent to backing storage. A page that has been changed but not yet written back is marked dirty. Therefore, data being “in the cache” does not by itself mean that the corresponding write has reached storage. Linux kernel documentation: Page Cache, version 6.9

Memory use

Page-cache memory can be reclaimed when the system needs memory because file data can be fetched from storage again. Linux documentation treats cache as a reclaimable memory category; its presence does not mean that all reported cache memory is permanently unavailable. Linux kernel documentation: Concepts overview

How storage-cache write modes differ

For Linux dm-cache, write mode changes how writes move between the cache device and the origin device. These are configuration choices for a block-device caching setup, not interchangeable settings for every system-level cache.

Mode Write behavior
Writeback Writes may be deferred to the origin device.
Writethrough A write waits until it has reached both the cache and origin devices.
Passthrough Reads are served from the origin device, and writes are forwarded there.

The appropriate mode depends on the configured devices and workload. Consult the current Linux dm-cache documentation and the system’s configuration before changing it.

Does “system-level cache” mean you should clear it?

No general clearing instruction follows from the term alone. A Linux page cache can be reclaimed by the kernel, while other cache types have different roles and behavior. Dirty cached writes also have not necessarily reached backing storage. Whether clearing or changing a cache is appropriate depends on its type, state, operating system, and workload; the Linux documentation cited here does not establish a universal user-facing cache-clearing recipe.

How to interpret the term

  • Ask which layer is meant: processor, address translation, operating-system file cache, filesystem framework, or storage device.
  • Check what is cached: file contents, address translations, or data migrated between storage devices are different things.
  • For Linux page-cache discussions, remember that ordinary file access generally uses the cache, cached writes may be dirty, and cached memory can be reclaimed.
  • Do not assume Linux-specific behavior applies to another operating system or to a product that uses the phrase differently.
