For TV viewers, the term usually means a separate internet-connected stick or box that plugs into a television and runs streaming apps.
What a streaming media player does
A typical TV streaming player connects to the internet, gives you an interface for browsing supported apps and services, and sends the selected picture and sound to your television. For example, Roku describes its Streaming Stick 4K as a device that plugs into a TV’s HDMI port and streams movies and shows over the internet. A stick is one form of player; the term also covers box-style devices and, more broadly, software that plays streamed media.
The broader phrase “digital media player” can include over-the-top devices that deliver content from online services to a TV, as described by ENERGY STAR. In everyday TV shopping, however, people generally mean a separate stick or box.
How an external player connects to a TV
- Connect the player to an available HDMI input on the TV. Depending on its design, it may plug directly into the port or connect by cable.
- Connect the player to power. Do not assume a TV’s USB port provides enough power; check the instructions for the specific model.
- Join the player to your home internet connection and complete its on-screen setup and any required account steps.
- Select the HDMI input used by the player with the TV remote.
Some sticks may need a short HDMI extender to fit or receive a reliable connection behind a particular TV. Roku’s setup guide covers these kinds of setup considerations; power and cable requirements vary by model.

Streaming player vs. smart TV or Blu-ray player
A smart TV combines the screen and streaming platform in one product. An external streaming player is a separate device connected to that TV. Roku makes this distinction for its own products: a Roku TV is a smart TV, while a Roku player connects to a TV and a Roku streaming stick plugs into HDMI. Other manufacturers may use different product names, so check the device description rather than relying on the label alone.
A Blu-ray player is another distinct device category. Some models may include streaming apps, but the presence of an app depends on that particular player. Check the supported services for the exact model, just as you would for a TV or external streamer.

- If your TV or Blu-ray player already has the apps and features you use, you may not need an additional streaming player.
- A separate player may be useful if the screen lacks an app you want or you prefer a different streaming platform.
- Before choosing a player, confirm that it supports the services and formats you need and connects properly to your TV and network.
What a streaming player does not include
Having a device with a streaming app does not automatically give you a subscription to that service. For instance, Netflix says its app is available on supported TVs and streaming players, but availability depends on device compatibility, and using the service may require a paid subscription. Check both the device’s app support and the service’s terms.

What to check when choosing a streaming player
- App support: Confirm that the exact device model supports the services you use.
- TV connection: Check for an available HDMI input and consider how a stick or box will fit around the TV and its other connections.
- Power: Review the model’s power requirements instead of assuming the TV’s USB port will work.
- Network: Make sure the player can connect in the way your home network allows and where the TV is located.
- Picture and sound: Match the formats you care about across the player, television and content service.
- Controls and extras: Compare remote, voice, casting, headphone and other features that matter to you.
- Separate costs: Account for the device price and any streaming-service subscriptions as different expenses.
