A solid-state laser is a laser that uses a solid gain medium—usually a crystal or glass containing optically active ions—to amplify light. A pump source excites the ions, and an optical resonator provides feedback so the amplified light can build into a beam.

How a solid-state laser works

The laser’s gain medium is a solid host material with active dopant ions. The host supplies the material’s structure and affects its thermal and mechanical behavior; the dopant’s energy levels help determine which wavelengths the laser can emit.

  1. Pumping: A source supplies energy to the gain medium. Common optical pumps include flashlamps and laser diodes.
  2. Population inversion: Pumping excites enough active ions that stimulated emission can outweigh absorption.
  3. Amplification: A photon can prompt an excited ion to emit another photon with matching energy and phase. The resonator sends light back through the gain medium, allowing amplification to build.
  4. Output: One mirror, called the output coupler, lets some of the amplified light leave as the laser beam.

The laser may operate continuously or produce pulses. Its behavior also depends on the pump, resonator design, how effectively pump energy reaches the gain medium, and how the system handles heat.

Examples of solid-state laser materials

Gain medium What it is known for
Nd:YAG Neodymium-doped yttrium aluminum garnet; its primary emission wavelength is 1,064 nm, according to IEEE Technology Navigator.
Nd:YVO4 and Nd:YLF Other crystalline hosts doped with neodymium.
Erbium- or thulium-doped glass Glass hosts used for other wavelength ranges.
Ti:sapphire Titanium-doped sapphire, a broadband tunable gain medium used in research oscillators and amplifiers.

The emitted wavelength is associated with the active species’ energy transition. The host and dopant together influence the available transitions and practical laser characteristics.

How solid-state lasers differ from other laser types

The most straightforward classification is by the gain medium: solid-state lasers use a solid, gas lasers use a gas, and dye lasers use a liquid dye solution. In technical contexts, “solid-state laser” commonly means a bulk crystal or glass laser.

The term can also be used broadly to include semiconductor diode lasers because semiconductors are solids. However, many technical sources treat semiconductor lasers as a separate class because their operating mechanism differs. When comparing laser categories, check which convention is being used.

What to consider when comparing solid-state lasers

“Solid-state” identifies the gain medium, not a particular output or application. Systems can differ substantially, so a useful comparison starts with the task the laser must perform:

  • Host and dopant: These shape the available emission transitions and material behavior.
  • Wavelength: Check that the output suits the intended application.
  • Operating mode: Determine whether continuous-wave or pulsed output is needed; for pulses, pulse characteristics matter too.
  • Power: Consider average output power and, for pulsed work, peak power where relevant.
  • Pumping and efficiency: Identify the pump source and how the system uses its energy.
  • Beam and heat management: Beam quality, resonator design, pump coupling, and thermal handling affect system performance.

Solid-state lasers are used in areas including telecommunications, industrial systems, and high-power research, but no single type is suited to every application. The required wavelength, power, operating mode, and thermal design determine which system fits.
