A social deduction game is a multiplayer game in which players infer hidden roles, identities, or team allegiances from incomplete information. Some players know—or suspect—that they belong to an opposing side and may lie, misdirect, or conceal what they know. Everyone else compares claims, watches behavior, and makes group decisions about whom to trust.
Conversation is central, but no single ruleset defines the entire genre. A game may use private abilities, open discussion, secret conversations, voting, nominations, a moderator, elimination, or continued participation after a character dies. Those are design choices rather than requirements.
How social deduction games work
At the start, the game creates an information gap. Players receive secret roles, team markers, character cards, or private instructions. One side usually has a shared objective, while another side has a concealed or conflicting objective. The group must act before it has complete proof.
A typical loop looks like this:
- Hidden information is distributed. Players learn some combination of their allegiance, role, ability, or starting clues.
- Players interact. They ask questions, make claims, report actions, observe reactions, and decide how much to reveal.
- The group evaluates evidence. Statements are compared with known information, other reports, and the consequences of earlier choices.
- A decision is made. Depending on the game, players vote, nominate someone, select a team, accuse a suspect, or choose another action.
- The result changes the information landscape. A reveal, ability, penalty, death, or failed mission gives the group new evidence.
The deduction is social because much of the evidence arrives through people: what they say, when they say it, what they avoid saying, and how they try to influence the group. It is deduction because players must form and test explanations rather than simply follow a known script. Clocktower Radio describes the premise through secret roles, identifying an opposing team, conversation, and group voting; individual games then implement those ideas in different ways.

What do roles do?
Roles determine what a player knows, which team they serve, and what actions they can take. They are the main mechanism for making players’ perspectives unequal. Two people can witness the same discussion and still have different reasons for believing it.
Team identity
The simplest role distinction is allegiance. A good, loyal, or investigative team may need to identify an opposing faction. The opposing team may need to survive, reach a numerical threshold, complete a secret objective, or prevent the other side from learning the truth. Some games add neutral roles with a separate victory condition.
Knowing your own team does not necessarily tell you who else is on it. A game might reveal teammates, give only partial information, or leave everyone uncertain. That uncertainty determines whether early conversation is about coordinating known allies or discovering the entire team structure.

Private information
A role can provide a clue, a list of possible identities, a night-time result, knowledge of another player’s status, or a restriction on what the player may learn. Information may be accurate, incomplete, delayed, or intentionally unreliable. Therefore, a confident claim is not automatically a verified fact.
Special abilities
Abilities create reasons to ask targeted questions and produce evidence that ordinary conversation cannot. A player might investigate, protect, exchange information, block an action, nominate another player, or alter how a vote is counted. The exact powers and timing are game-specific; role names should never be assumed to mean the same thing across different titles.
Unequal but balanced perspectives
Good role design gives each side useful but imperfect tools. If one faction has complete information and the other has none, discussion can become performative rather than deductive. If every clue is ambiguous, players cannot build a reliable case. Designers balance the amount, reliability, and cost of information so that claims can be challenged without making the answer obvious.
How does bluffing work?
Bluffing is an attempt to make other players believe a claim, identity, or interpretation that advances your objective. A concealed opposing player may claim to have an investigative role, report a false result, imitate a teammate’s priorities, or encourage a vote against an innocent player.

Bluffing is more than lying
A bluff can be a direct falsehood, but it can also be selective truth. A player may reveal a real ability while hiding its timing, omit a damaging detail, answer a different question, or let an incorrect assumption stand. Delaying a claim can be a bluff if the delay is intended to create a believable story later.
Some games also allow a player on the ostensibly good side to conceal information. Revealing a powerful role may make that player a target, expose a teammate, or give the opposing team a way to manipulate the next decision. Consequently, silence is not proof of guilt, and an inaccurate statement is not always proof of an opposing role.
How players test a bluff
- Check consistency: Does the claim fit earlier statements, public events, and the player’s previous votes?
- Check timing: Why was the information revealed now rather than earlier?
- Check incentives: Which team benefits if the group accepts the claim?
- Check alternatives: Could the same result be explained by another role or ability?
- Check risk: Would a truthful player reasonably keep this information private under the game’s rules?
These checks produce probabilities, not certainty. A good deduction is a model that explains several observations better than competing models. Treating one awkward answer as conclusive evidence makes the game easier to manipulate.
What is table talk?
Table talk is the social reasoning layer of the game: public claims, questions, persuasion, accusations, voting arguments, private conversations where allowed, and the decision to listen instead of speak. It is not merely chatter between turns. It is how players exchange the information needed to evaluate hidden identities.
Speaking and listening
Players can contribute by presenting a theory, asking for a timeline, comparing two accounts, or explaining why a vote helps a particular team. Listening is equally important. Someone who says little may be carefully tracking contradictions, following a role restriction, or deliberately avoiding attention. Quiet play can be strategic, but it is not inherently trustworthy.
Public and private discussion
Some games use one shared conversation. Others permit short private meetings, team channels, timed rounds, or restricted communication. The rules may specify who can speak, when they can speak, and whether a dead or eliminated player may continue to participate. Do not import conversation rules from one title into another.
Persuasion versus evidence
Confidence, humor, urgency, and eloquence can influence a group without adding factual evidence. A useful table-talk habit is to separate the claim from the reason for believing it: “I think player A is on the opposing team because their reported result conflicts with player B’s result,” rather than “Player A sounds suspicious.”

What happens in a typical round?
Many games alternate information-gathering and decision phases, but the sequence below is a common pattern rather than a universal rule.

1. Setup and role distribution
A facilitator or the rules assign secret roles and explain the available information. Players should know what their own role permits before making claims; misunderstandings at this stage can look like deliberate deception.
2. An information phase
Players receive clues, perform hidden actions, or observe a result. The information may arrive simultaneously or in an ordered sequence. In a moderator-led design, the facilitator records effects and resolves ambiguous interactions.
3. Open discussion
The group shares selected information and tests competing stories. Players decide whether to claim a role, reveal only a result, ask for corroboration, or withhold details for strategic reasons.
4. Nomination, voting, or selection
The group acts on its current theory. A vote may remove a player, choose a team, approve a mission, or trigger an investigation. Some games require a majority; others use ranked choices, simultaneous ballots, or a threshold that changes over time.
5. Resolution and new evidence
The result can confirm a claim, contradict it, or create another ambiguity. The next phase begins with a changed set of possibilities. Good players update their beliefs rather than defending an earlier vote simply because they made it.
Blood on the Clocktower as a concrete example
Blood on the Clocktower is a documented example of the genre, not a definition of every social deduction game. The Pandemonium Institute describes it as a social game of deduction and deception for five to 20 players, with opposing good and evil teams and a Storyteller who conducts the game. Asmodee’s product listing gives the same 5–20 player range and describes the Storyteller and the game’s physical components.

Each player receives a good or evil token alongside a unique character. The publisher summarizes the central conflict this way:
“Good players share information to solve the mystery whilst evil players lie about who they are and what they know.”

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsSpecial offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
That sentence illustrates the genre’s core pairing: one side tries to combine partial information, while the other side tries to make a false explanation appear credible. The character system adds role-specific knowledge and abilities, so a discussion is about more than personality or voting history.
The game also demonstrates why elimination should be treated as a design choice. The publisher’s About the Game page emphasizes that death does not end a player’s participation. A dead player may lose powers or face restrictions while still affecting later decisions, which keeps the whole group engaged instead of turning eliminated players into spectators. The Storyteller manages phases, resolves effects, and supplies the structure needed for a large group.
Terminology is likewise title-specific. For example, the Blood on the Clocktower glossary defines words associated with that game’s characters and day phase. Those terms should not be treated as universal labels for every social deduction game.

| Comparison axis | Questions to ask | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Group size | What player range is supported, and does your group fit it? | Discussion quality, downtime, and the number of plausible suspects change sharply with group size. |
| Information and roles | Do players have unique abilities, shared team knowledge, private clues, or mostly a hidden allegiance? | This determines whether deduction focuses on role claims, behavioral patterns, or both. |
| Conversation | Is discussion open, private, timed, phased, or restricted? | Communication rules control how evidence moves around the table. |
| Elimination and participation | Does a targeted player stop acting, keep talking, retain a vote, or affect the outcome in another way? | Participation rules determine downtime and how costly an early mistake feels. |
| Facilitation | Is a moderator, Storyteller, or app needed to run phases and adjudicate events? | A facilitator can support complex information systems but adds a teaching and staffing requirement. |
| Decision structure | Does the group vote, nominate, choose teams, resolve accusations, or use another process? | The decision system determines how persuasion translates into consequences. |
The published 5–20 figure belongs specifically to Blood on the Clocktower; there is no equivalent genre-wide player statistic established here. Check each game’s own rulebook for its permitted range and communication rules.

Practical strategy for each side
If you are investigating the opposing team
- Record claims and timing instead of relying on memory.
- Ask for specific, falsifiable details: what was learned, when, and under which role rule.
- Compare independent accounts before demanding a reveal.
- State your uncertainty and identify what future result would change your mind.
- Consider whether your proposed vote creates useful information even if your suspect is innocent.
If you are hiding an opposing identity
- Learn the plausible information your claimed role could possess before making a story.
- Keep your account consistent with the game’s timing and action limits.
- Avoid adding unnecessary details that create extra ways to contradict yourself.
- React to new evidence rather than defending a prediction that no longer fits.
- Remember that an aggressive accusation can attract attention if it appears designed only to redirect a vote.
Neither list is a guaranteed formula. The strongest move depends on the role mix, the information reliability, the voting rules, and what the other players already know.
Common misconceptions
“Every social deduction game is a murder-and-elimination game.”
No. Some games remove players or characters, while others resolve missions, choose teams, score objectives, or allow a player to remain active after death. Elimination is one possible consequence, not the genre’s definition.
“The moderator is always optional.”
Some designs can run without a dedicated facilitator, but others rely on one to distribute private information, track hidden effects, enforce timing, and answer rules questions. A moderator requirement is an important practical consideration for a group.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →“The best strategy is to tell the truth.”
Truthful information can be dangerous if it exposes a powerful role or helps the opposing team. Depending on the rules, a player may have good reasons to conceal a role, delay a claim, or present only part of what they know.
“A nervous player must be guilty.”
People have different speaking styles, and uncertainty is built into the design. Behavioral impressions can become supporting evidence, but they are weaker than a claim that conflicts with a known ability or event.
How to make a first session work
- Choose a player count inside the game’s stated range. Do not assume a title designed for a large group will work equally well with four people.
- Explain the information boundaries. Tell players what they may know, what they may claim, and when private conversation is allowed.
- Teach the win conditions separately. Players should understand what each team is trying to accomplish before discussing tactics.
- Use a visible record. A simple list of claims, votes, and resolved events prevents the conversation from depending entirely on memory.
- Set discussion norms. Agree on time limits, whether players may interrupt, and how questions are handled.
- Debrief the information flow. After the game, discuss which clues were reliable and which rules created confusion. This improves the next session without revealing a universal strategy that may not apply elsewhere.
The most useful mental model is to treat a social deduction game as a contest over explanations. Roles create unequal information and powers; bluffing tries to make one explanation look more credible than it is; table talk supplies the claims and observations used to compare explanations. The particular rules decide how those elements are distributed, how decisions are made, and whether a player remains involved after a loss.
