A smart litter box is a cat litter box with automated cleaning, connected features, or both. Many models detect when a cat leaves and then rake, sift, or rotate litter to separate waste; app-connected versions may also show usage activity, send alerts, or let you adjust settings. The label does not mean every box has every feature.
How does a smart litter box work?
Most self-cleaning models use a sensor to detect a cat’s entry or exit. After the cat leaves, a mechanism runs—sometimes after a delay—to separate waste from clean litter and move it into a receptacle. Common designs rake waste into a tray or rotate or sift the litter. Hill’s Pet Care describes the sensor, cleaning mechanism, and waste receptacle as typical parts of automatic boxes (Hill’s overview).
Connected functions are separate from the cleaning mechanism. Depending on the model, an app may display usage history, allow settings changes, or send waste-level alerts. Some systems track a cat’s weight or litter-box habits. A product described as “smart” does not necessarily include all of these features.

What features can “smart” mean?

A monitor does not have to replace the litter box. Purina’s Petivity Smart Litterbox Monitor sits under most litter boxes and tracks weight and litter habits (Purina Petivity). Purina says changes may be associated with conditions that need veterinary diagnosis, but the monitor is not intended to diagnose or treat disease. Tracking data can prompt a conversation with a veterinarian; it is not a medical conclusion.

How do product designs differ?
Manufacturer examples illustrate why it is useful to check the mechanism and supplies rather than relying on the word “smart.”
- Rake and tray: PetSafe’s ScoopFree Crystal Smart is app-connected and provides activity monitoring and alerts. It uses disposable trays and ScoopFree crystal litter; PetSafe’s support instructions say to use that litter (PetSafe product page; PetSafe support instructions).
- Rotating chamber: Litter-Robot 4 detects entry and exit, then starts a cleaning countdown. Its app provides usage and weight insights. Whisker recommends clumping clay litter for this model (Litter-Robot 4).
- Separate monitor: Petivity adds weight and habit tracking under an existing box without being a self-cleaning box (Purina Petivity).
- Other connected design: BISSELL describes CleanWell as offering app-based usage tracking, waste-level alerts, and an obstruction response. Its page claims up to 20 days of waste storage in a one-cat home; that is a product-specific manufacturer claim, not a general expectation for smart boxes (BISSELL CleanWell).
What should you check before choosing one?
- Cat fit and safeguards: Check the manufacturer’s age and weight guidance, entry design, sensor behavior, and what happens if a cat returns during a cleaning cycle. For Litter-Robot 4, Whisker states that automatic mode requires a cat to weigh at least 1.36 kg (3 lb), recommends semi-automatic operation below that threshold, and says the unit is suitable for up to four cats. These are specifications for that model, not all smart litter boxes (Whisker’s Litter-Robot 4 guidance). PetSafe advises that kittens under six months use ScoopFree unplugged while waste is scooped manually (PetSafe product page).
- Litter and recurring supplies: Verify whether the unit accepts the litter you already use or requires a particular type. ScoopFree uses crystal litter and disposable trays; Litter-Robot 4 is designed for clumping clay litter and has model-specific liner and filter needs. Check replacement compatibility before buying supplies (PetSafe support; Whisker).
- Cleaning and household fit: Consider the waste tray or drawer, how it is emptied, access for cleaning, floor space, noise, and whether your cat accepts the device. Suitability claims from manufacturers apply to their own models; they do not guarantee that every cat or household will be a good fit.
- Monitoring limits: Treat activity or weight trends as observations, not diagnosis. Ask a veterinarian about a concerning change rather than relying on an app to identify its cause.
Does “smart” mean it will detect health problems?
No. Some products record weight or litter habits, and a change in those patterns may be useful information to discuss with a veterinarian. That is different from diagnosing a condition. Purina explicitly limits Petivity’s role to monitoring, not diagnosing, treating, mitigating, or curing disease (Purina Petivity). BISSELL’s product page attributes this statement to Dr. Danielle Bernal, DVM, of its Pet Care Advisory Board: “Smart litter boxes that address noise, cleanliness, and scent help support both behavioral health and early detection of medical issues.” This is a manufacturer-page statement, not proof that a particular box prevents illness or provides a diagnosis (BISSELL CleanWell).

Is a smart litter box the right kind of upgrade?
It may suit an owner who wants waste removal automated, app-based usage records, or alerts. If the main goal is tracking while keeping an existing box, a separate monitor is a different kind of product. Decide which function matters, then check the model’s safety instructions, litter compatibility, and ongoing supply requirements; app connectivity alone does not tell you whether the box fits your cat or routine.
