1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsA session border controller (SBC) is a network intermediary that manages SIP signaling and, depending on its design, media traffic as voice or other real-time communications cross between networks. It commonly sits at an enterprise or service-provider network edge, where it can apply security and routing policies, assist with interoperability and NAT traversal, and monitor traffic. Its exact features and architecture vary: “SBC” is a market category, not one required design.
Where does an SBC sit in a VoIP network?
An SBC is typically deployed at a boundary between SIP networks. That might be between an enterprise phone system and a SIP trunk provider, between a service provider’s access and backbone networks, or where two providers exchange traffic. The IETF describes these deployment positions in RFC 5853; an enterprise SIP-trunking reference architecture also places an edge SBC between the enterprise environment and external traffic in RFC 10006.
For example, when an office PBX places a call through a SIP trunk, signaling and media may cross the enterprise’s network boundary. An SBC at that edge can apply the organization’s policies to the session and help connect the PBX’s SIP environment to the provider’s. The SBC is more than an IP router: it can participate in handling session signaling and, in some deployments, the media path as well.
What does a session border controller do?
Depending on the implementation and configuration, an SBC may provide some combination of these functions:

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Access and security policy: control which signaling or media traffic is allowed across the boundary and help detect or mitigate certain denial-of-service conditions.
- Topology hiding: limit how much internal network information is exposed to another network.
- NAT traversal: help sessions work when endpoints or networks use network address translation. Its interaction with ICE and SDP offer/answer procedures depends on the deployment; RFC 8839 describes the relevant ICE procedures.
- Interoperability: adapt or repair signaling when connected networks have different protocol expectations.
- Media handling and monitoring: relay or otherwise manage media traffic and provide visibility into traffic or quality.
- Traffic management: apply policy to signaling or media flows, including QoS-related handling where supported.
These are possible capabilities, not a checklist every SBC implements. The IETF’s RFC 6406 describes an SBC as a configurable network element that may combine functions such as signaling, data-path border handling, lookup, and location routing.
Is an SBC a SIP proxy or a B2BUA?
There is no single answer that applies to every product or deployment. An SBC may act as a back-to-back user agent (B2BUA), terminating one SIP dialog and originating another, while also relaying media or performing other border functions. Its role depends on its design and local policy. RFC 7092 describes different B2BUA roles and explicitly notes that SBC is a market-category term rather than a standardized system type.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
That distinction matters because the label alone does not tell you precisely how a particular SBC handles signaling, media, or session features. Those details must be checked in the implementation’s technical documentation and configuration.
Is “SBC” a standardized architecture?
No single standard prescribes one architecture or a mandatory feature set for all SBCs. RFC 7092 states: “Session Border Controllers (SBCs) are a market category term and are not specified in any standard.” RFC 5853 likewise calls the term relatively non-specific. The RFCs describe common roles and deployment patterns, rather than a universal blueprint every device must follow.

What are the trade-offs?
Placing an intermediary at a SIP boundary can give an organization or provider a point to enforce policy and manage interoperability. However, some SBC practices can affect end-to-end security or interfere with SIP feature negotiation. RFC 5853 discusses these architectural concerns; they do not mean that every SBC necessarily causes them. The outcome depends on how the system is implemented and configured, including what it changes or terminates.
