A secure Web protocol usually means HTTPS: HTTP communication sent over a connection protected by Transport Layer Security (TLS). It helps protect information in transit from being read or silently changed, and lets your browser check that it is connecting to a service authorized for the site address. HTTPS does not, by itself, prove that a website or its operator is trustworthy.

What does “secure Web protocol” mean?

In everyday Web use, the phrase refers to HTTPS, the secure form of HTTP. HTTP defines how a client, such as a browser, requests a resource and how a server responds. TLS creates a protected communication channel for that exchange. HTTPS is the URI scheme and set of rules that require HTTP communication for an HTTPS address to use a secured channel.

RFC 9110, the IETF’s HTTP Semantics standard, says: “A client MUST ensure that its HTTP requests for an "https" resource are secured, prior to being communicated, and that it only accepts secured responses to those requests.” RFC 9110, Section 4.2.2.

What protections does HTTPS provide?

TLS is designed to provide authentication, confidentiality, and integrity. During its handshake, the parties negotiate cryptographic parameters and establish shared key material. TLS then protects the data exchanged over the connection. As the abstract of the current TLS 1.3 specification puts it, “TLS allows client/server applications to communicate over the Internet in a way that is designed to prevent eavesdropping, tampering, and message forgery.” RFC 9846.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • Confidentiality: Network observers should not be able to read the protected HTTP traffic.
  • Integrity: Changes to protected traffic should be detectable rather than silently accepted.
  • Server authentication: The client checks that the service identity is an acceptable match for the requested site origin, helping prevent an impostor from posing as that site.

In ordinary browsing, the browser authenticates the site to the user’s device. Client authentication is optional; a padlock or HTTPS address does not mean the visitor has authenticated themselves to the website. Some deployments use mutual TLS to authenticate clients as well.

HTTP vs. HTTPS

Feature HTTP HTTPS
URI scheme http https
Secured transport required by the scheme No Yes; the client must secure requests and accept only secured responses
Server identity check for the origin No HTTPS certificate identity binding is specified The client verifies that the service identity matches the requested origin
Confidentiality and integrity Not provided by HTTP semantics alone Intended to be provided by the TLS channel
Origin identity Distinct from the same authority under HTTPS Distinct from the same authority under HTTP

Because the schemes have separate origins, http://example.com and https://example.com are not the same origin, even though they use the same host name. That distinction matters to browsers and applications that isolate data or apply security rules by origin. These are protocol-level distinctions; implementations and negotiated cryptographic mechanisms can change over time. See RFC 9110 and RFC 9846.

Is HTTPS the same as TLS?

No. TLS is the security protocol that protects the channel; HTTPS is HTTP used with that protected channel under the https scheme. A simple way to distinguish them is: HTTP describes the Web exchange, TLS protects its transport, and HTTPS requires the protected form for the resource.

The current TLS 1.3 specification listed by the RFC Editor is RFC 9846, which obsoletes RFC 8446. The TLS version and cryptographic mechanisms used by a particular connection are negotiated and should not be treated as timeless properties of HTTPS.

Does HTTPS mean a website is safe?

No. HTTPS protects a connection and verifies that the service identity matches the requested origin; it does not certify that the site’s claims are true, its operator is honest, its business practices are fair, or its downloads are free of malware. Security issues can also arise in a website’s application or in how a user’s device handles content, rather than in the protocol itself.

HTTPS also does not make all browsing activity anonymous or conceal every detail. TLS does not necessarily hide traffic length, and some connection metadata may remain visible. The protection is important, but it is not a promise that every aspect of a visit is private.

How does HSTS relate to HTTPS?

HTTP Strict Transport Security (HSTS) is an additional mechanism associated with secure transport behavior for a host; it is not another name for HTTPS. HTTPS defines the secure URI scheme and the requirement to protect its HTTP communication. HSTS provides a way for a host to indicate that browsers should use secure transport for it. The mechanism is specified in RFC 6797.
