A screen capture video is a recording of what appears on a screen as it changes over time. It can show a whole display, a selected area, an application window, or a browser tab; depending on the device and settings, it may also include microphone narration or system audio. A screenshot captures one moment, while a screen recording captures activity over a span of time.
What does “screen capture video” mean?
“Screen capture video” describes video made by recording visual activity shown on a screen. It is not one specific application, device, or file format. People also use the terms “screen recording” and “screen capture” for this kind of recording.
The recording may be useful for showing how to use software, documenting a bug, presenting a process, or keeping a record of on-screen activity. What appears in the video depends on the capture area you choose and what the recording software is allowed to capture.
How is a screen recording different from a screenshot?
A screenshot is a still image of screen content at one instant. A screen capture video records a sequence of images over time, so it can show movement, changes, and the order of actions. Video may also include audio, but audio is optional and depends on the recorder and its settings.

What can a screen capture video include?
Different capture areas
The available choices vary by platform and software. A recorder may offer a whole display, a selected portion, an application or window, or a browser tab. For example, OBS documents display and window capture sources; Apple’s Mac instructions cover recording the entire screen or a selected portion, and selected-window recording on macOS Tahoe 26 or later; Chrome’s browser capture documentation describes user selection of a tab, window, or screen.
- Whole display: captures everything visible on the chosen monitor, which can be useful for a workflow spanning applications.
- Selected area: limits the recording to part of the display, when the tool supports it.
- Window or application: focuses on one window rather than the whole desktop, where supported.
- Browser tab: records a selected tab in workflows that provide tab capture.
Before you start, consider whether notifications, other open windows, or personal information could appear in the chosen area.
Optional audio
A recording can be silent or include microphone narration. Some combinations of operating system and recorder can also capture system or application audio, but this is not universal and may require separate setup or permission. Check which audio sources are selected, then make a short test recording to confirm the result.
Which screen recording method should you use?
Choose a method based on the job, not just the number of features. For a simple one-off recording, a built-in operating-system tool may be enough. A separate recorder such as OBS offers capture sources and recording controls that suit workflows needing more setup or control. A browser’s screen-capture features are mainly relevant to developers building browser-based recording experiences.

These are examples rather than a ranking of every recorder. For a Mac workflow, follow Apple’s current support instructions; for OBS, use its capture-source and quick-start documentation. The best fit depends on your operating system, desired capture area, audio needs, and how much control you want.
How do you record a screen on a Mac?
Apple’s Mac instructions use Screenshot or QuickTime Player. The precise options shown can vary with macOS version. The current Apple support page includes selected-window recording for macOS Tahoe 26 or later, so do not expect every option on an older Mac.
- Open Screenshot or QuickTime Player and choose the screen-recording option described in Apple’s instructions.
- Choose whether to record the entire screen or a selected portion. On macOS Tahoe 26 or later, Apple also documents recording a selected window.
- If you want narration or other audio, select the microphone input provided by the recording workflow. Do not assume system audio is included just because a microphone is selected.
- Start the recording, perform the on-screen actions you want to show, and stop the recording when finished.
- Review the resulting video. Confirm the capture area, visibility of sensitive information, and whether the audio is present and intelligible.
Apple notes that some apps may prevent their windows from being recorded. If a window is missing or obscured in the result, check whether the app restricts recording rather than assuming the recorder malfunctioned.
How do you record with OBS?
OBS provides a Display Capture source for an entire monitor and a Window Capture source for a selected window. Exact source availability and behavior vary by operating system and OBS version.

- In OBS, create or select a scene for the recording.
- Add a Display Capture source to record a monitor, or a Window Capture source to target a window. Choose the source appropriate to the content you want visible.
- Set up the audio devices you need in OBS. If you want narration, check the microphone source; if you need system or application sound, verify that your operating-system and OBS setup supports and captures it.
- Make a short test recording. Check both the image and audio before recording something important.
- Start recording, perform the task, then stop and review the file.

How does browser screen capture work?
For developers, Chrome documents getDisplayMedia() as a way for a browser application to request display capture. The user receives a prompt to choose a tab, window, or screen. Chrome also documents tab-capture approaches for browser extensions. These implementation details are for building browser recording features; someone recording a screen for personal use does not need to call the API directly.
Browser capture is permission-driven: the person chooses what to share through the browser’s selection flow. Chrome’s documentation is specifically about its developer implementation guidance, and should not be treated as a guarantee that every browser, operating system, or configuration behaves identically.
What permissions and restrictions should you check?
- Screen-recording permission: Apple says apps should request permission before capturing screen content. Review the system prompt and grant access only to the app you intend to use.
- Protected windows: Some apps may prevent their windows from appearing in a recording. Test the target application first if its content is important.
- Audio inputs: Confirm microphone selection and any system-audio option separately; available sources depend on the software and platform.
- Capture selection: Verify that you selected the intended monitor, area, window, or tab. A wrong selection can produce a valid recording of the wrong content.
- Privacy: Close unrelated material and consider notifications or account details that could appear while recording.
Apple’s developer documentation describes ScreenCaptureKit as a framework for streaming screen content and audio with fine-grained control over displays, apps, and windows. Apple also says screen-recording permission should be requested from the person before capture.

Common problems and fixes
The video is blank or a window is missing
Confirm the selected display, window, or tab and check that recording permission was granted. If a particular app window remains absent, it may block capture; Apple notes that some apps do not allow their windows to be recorded.
The recording has no narration
Check that the intended microphone is selected and available, then make a short test recording. A screen recorder can capture video without audio, and microphone input is not automatically enabled by every tool.
System audio is missing
Check whether your device, operating system, and recorder support system or application audio capture and whether the relevant source is enabled. Microphone narration and system audio are separate sources; selecting one does not establish that the other will be recorded.
The wrong content appears
Stop and reselect the capture area. If you chose a full display, other windows and notifications may be visible; a window or tab capture may better fit the task if available.

The recording fails after a permission prompt
Check the operating system’s screen-recording permission for the recorder, then reopen or retry the capture as the system requires. For browser-based capture, use the browser’s user-facing picker and choose the desired source.
