A scene description language is a structured way to represent a 3D scene so software can interpret it—for example, to assemble or render its objects, materials, lights, and animation. The term describes a category, not one universal format: Autodesk Alias has a specific language called SDL, while OpenUSD is a broader framework for describing and composing 3D worlds.
What a scene description language describes
A scene description records the elements of a 3D scene and relevant properties or relationships between them. Depending on the language and its purpose, software can use that representation to build a scene, edit it, simulate it, or render it. It is structured data for graphics software—not simply a prose caption, and not necessarily an interactive application.
The contents depend on the particular language. Autodesk’s Alias documentation describes its SDL as carrying scene data such as models, shaders, lights, and animation. Those examples explain what a scene description can contain, but they should not be taken as a fixed list required of every language.
What SDL means in Autodesk Alias
In Autodesk Alias, SDL means Scene Description Language. It is a particular renderer-oriented language and file workflow, rather than the name of every scene description language. Autodesk’s documentation says the interactive modeler typically generates the data and sends it to a renderer. The Alias Scene Description Language Reference describes its purpose this way: “The Scene Description Language is intended to describe a scene. It is not meant for interaction.” That statement concerns Alias SDL, not every system in the broader category.

Alias SDL has some format-specific details. Autodesk documents its SDL files as binary and describes using bsdl to convert them into editable text. The text can be manually modified for greater mathematical control or procedural effects, then rendered with a standalone renderer or through the interactive modeler. These binary-file and conversion details apply to Alias SDL; they do not define all scene-description languages.
The National Archives’ PRONOM registry identifies Alias Scene Description Language as PUID fmt/1093, lists the .sdl extension, and notes that files may have no extension. The registry record is based on a Canadian Centre for Architecture submission and dates to 2017.

How scene description language differs from OpenUSD
OpenUSD, or Universal Scene Description, is a modern example of a scene-description approach with a broader role than Alias SDL’s documented renderer workflow. NVIDIA describes OpenUSD as “an open and extensible framework for describing, composing, simulating, and collaborating in 3D worlds.” That is NVIDIA’s vendor description, not a standards-body definition.

How to interpret the term
- Use scene description language for the general category: structured representations of 3D scenes.
- Use Alias SDL when you mean Autodesk Alias’s specific renderer-oriented language and file workflow.
- Use OpenUSD when referring to Universal Scene Description and its broader framework role.
Autodesk’s cited SDL documentation dates to 2015–2016 and does not establish current product availability. The Alias file details above are therefore statements about the documented format and workflow, not a claim about the present availability of Alias products.
