A pure function in Python returns a result determined by its inputs and does not cause observable side effects. To recognize one, ask two questions: Would the same inputs produce the same result? And does calling it change or interact with anything beyond the returned value?
Pure functions are a useful functional-programming technique, not a requirement for every Python program. Python supports procedural, object-oriented, and functional styles, so you can use pure transformations where they help while keeping necessary input/output at the edges of an application.
What makes a Python function pure?
The Python Software Foundation’s Functional Programming HOWTO describes the core idea this way: “Avoiding side effects means not using data structures that get updated as a program runs; every function’s output must only depend on its input.” In practical terms, a function is pure when its output is determined by its inputs and it does not produce an observable effect outside that output.
For example, normalize_name returns a transformed string:

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
def normalize_name(name):
return name.strip().casefold()
For a given string, it returns the same normalized value. It does not print, write a file, alter a global variable, or modify the input. Python strings are immutable, as noted in the Python glossary, so string methods such as strip() and casefold() produce strings rather than changing the original string.
Local assignments do not automatically make a function impure
A function may use local variables and assignments and still follow practical functional style. Binding a local name is not the same as changing shared state or causing a visible effect. The relevant questions are what the function changes or interacts with and whether its result depends only on its inputs.
What counts as a side effect?
A side effect is an observable change or interaction that is not represented solely by the function’s return value. It can happen even when a function returns a value: the return value does not erase an additional effect.

- Changing caller-owned data: modifying a list, dictionary, object, or other mutable value supplied by the caller.
- Changing shared state: updating a global variable or other state that code outside the function can observe.
- Input/output: printing text, writing a file, or interacting with an external system.
- Other observable actions: the Python HOWTO specifically includes calling
time.sleep()among its side-effect examples.
The HOWTO summarizes the design principle: “Functional style discourages functions with side effects that modify internal state or make other changes that aren’t visible in the function’s return value.”
How mutation changes a function’s behavior
These two functions both add an item, but they treat the input list differently:
def add_item(items, item):
items.append(item)
return items
def with_item(items, item):
return [*items, item]
add_item appends to the caller’s list, so the call changes data outside its return value. Another part of the program holding that list can see the change. with_item instead constructs and returns a new list, leaving the supplied list untouched. This illustrates the difference in behavior; it is not a claim that either implementation is faster.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.
- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
The same distinction applies to dictionaries and objects: returning a changed copy keeps the caller’s original value intact, while editing a shared mutable object changes state visible elsewhere. A function that changes only data created and kept within its own call does not necessarily expose that change as a side effect.
Why use pure functions?
The Python HOWTO names formal provability, modularity, composability, and easier debugging and testing as advantages of functional design. These are potential design benefits, not guarantees of correctness or speed.
Testing has fewer moving parts
When a function takes inputs and returns an answer without altering surrounding state, a test can supply values and inspect the result. It generally needs less setup than a test that must prepare shared state, account for a mutation, or observe an external interaction. This makes failures easier to isolate: the input and output are a clear place to start investigating.

Small functions are easier to combine
A function with a clear input/output interface can be used as one step in a larger transformation. For example, one function can normalize a name and another can format it; callers can connect those operations without needing to account for hidden changes between them. This modularity makes it easier to reuse or replace individual steps.
Reasoning can be more direct
If a function’s output depends on its inputs, callers do not need to account for an unrelated change to a global variable or a previous call’s mutation when understanding its result. That can make behavior easier to inspect and reason about, though pure code can still contain bugs and still needs appropriate tests.

Python is a multi-paradigm language. The HOWTO notes that programs can be largely procedural, object-oriented, or functional, and practical functional-style Python can use ordinary implementation features such as local assignments. You do not need to eliminate every assignment, or make an entire application free of input/output, to benefit from pure functions.

A useful approach is to keep most calculations and data transformations in functions that return values, then put necessary effects in a small outer layer. For example, a program can read a file, pass its contents to functions that parse and transform data, and write the final result after those transformations are complete. The pure parts are easier to test with input values; the outer layer handles interaction with the outside world.
Compare two implementations with three questions
- Mutation: Does the function change a list, dictionary, object, or shared state that the caller or another part of the program can observe?
- Effects: Does it print, write a file, sleep, or interact with an external system?
- Test setup: Can a test provide inputs and inspect a return value, or must it recreate and inspect surrounding state as well?
These questions are more useful than judging a function by its syntax. A function can contain several local steps and still be straightforward to reason about; conversely, a short function can have an effect if it mutates shared data or performs I/O.
