A Picture-Level Benchmark (PLB) was a graphics-performance benchmark that timed how long a computer took to draw specified complete pictures. It helped compare graphics performance across hardware platforms, but it did not measure image quality. PLB is historical: SPEC says the project retired in 2000 and the benchmark was last updated in 1993.

What did the Picture-Level Benchmark measure?

PLB measured the time required to draw a defined picture on a graphics system, including CRT-based engineering workstations and personal computers. Its purpose was to compare graphics-display performance using consistent test descriptions, timing, and reporting—not to judge how attractive, accurate, or clear the resulting image looked.

The PLB project group put the distinction plainly in SPEC’s archived overview: “The PLB allows buyers to compare performance, it does not address the issue of display quality.” SPEC’s archived PLB overview

How did PLB work?

PLB used three formats to make tests and results more consistent:

  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • Benchmark Interchange Format (BIF): described the geometry and actions making up a test picture.
  • Benchmark Timing Methodology (BTM): standardized how performance was measured.
  • Benchmark Reporting Format (BRF): structured the reported results.

The PLB program processed BIF files and ran the tests. Because the program depended on the platform, it had to be adapted to a particular hardware configuration. Implementation tests and standard benchmark files helped developers check and compare these adaptations.

The most representative test route was to convert a user’s own application workload into BIF and run it through a vendor’s PLB port. That took time and specialist effort, so the project also supplied standard files based on common applications. SPEC’s archived PLB overview

How do you read PLB scores?

PLB results distinguish between literal and optimized runs. They answer different questions, so a result is meaningful only alongside its workload and system details.

Result or figure What it means
PLB_lit (literal) The benchmark run without application- or platform-specific optimizations.
PLB_opt (optimized) A tuned result for a platform’s hardware and graphics API. Tuning could involve changes such as drawing order or primitives.
PLBwire93 A wireframe-category composite: the geometric mean of literal and optimized results for the standard tests in that category.
PLBsurf93 A surface-category composite: the geometric mean of literal and optimized results for the standard tests in that category.

Higher PLB scores indicate better performance—less time to display the tested picture. An optimized score describes tuned performance; it does not show what an application would achieve without comparable tuning. To assess whether two results can be compared, check:

  • What optimizations were applied.

PLB’s reporting format included system configuration and test details to help readers make that assessment. SPEC’s archived PLB overview

What workloads did PLB include?

The suite changed over time, so published file counts refer to different points in its development. Digital Equipment Corporation’s April 1992 DECstation report lists five then-approved files. SPEC’s August 1996 overview describes an eight-file standard suite organized into wireframe, surface, and “other” categories.

Is PLB still current?

No. SPEC’s retirement notice says the PLB project group voted to disband and retire the benchmark in 2000 after interest declined as vendors moved toward API-level benchmarks such as Viewperf and GLperf, as well as application-level benchmarks. The notice says PLB was last updated in 1993. It also said information, standard files, and archived results would remain available through the PLB page at that time; that notice does not establish whether downloads remain available today.
