A PC hard disk drive (HDD) is a storage device that records data magnetically on rigid, spinning platters. Read/write heads access the platter surfaces. It stores files and programs for later use; it is not the computer’s working memory.
What does “hard disk” mean?
Strictly speaking, a hard disk is the rigid magnetic medium that holds data. A hard disk drive (HDD) is the complete device built around that medium. NIST defines a hard disk as a rigid magnetic disk fixed within a drive unit, while noting that a hard disk can also be a removable cartridge containing one or more magnetic disks. In everyday PC use, “hard drive” and “HDD” usually mean the complete storage device.
How does an HDD store and read data?
An HDD’s spindle motor spins its platters while read/write heads move across their surfaces. To write data, the drive changes magnetic arrangements on the platter; to read it, the heads detect those arrangements. A higher platter rotation speed can enable faster reading and writing, but that general mechanism does not guarantee a particular drive’s performance.
How is an HDD different from an SSD?
| Feature | HDD | SSD |
|---|---|---|
| Storage method | Magnetic data on spinning platters | Solid-state storage |
| Moving parts | Platters spin and read/write heads move | Microsoft describes SSDs as noiseless and smaller |
| General performance comparison | Microsoft describes HDDs as slower than SSDs | Microsoft describes SSDs as faster than HDDs |
| Typical context in Microsoft’s overview | More common in older devices | Most common storage drives today |
These are broad comparisons, not guarantees for every model or workload. When comparing specific drives, consider the particular PC, capacity, price, and the work the drive needs to handle.

What do HDD, SSD, and SATA mean?
- HDD or hard disk drive: A storage device that uses magnetic platters.
- Hard disk: The rigid magnetic medium inside the drive; in everyday conversation, it can also mean the drive itself.
- SSD: A solid-state storage device, not a magnetic spinning disk.
- SATA: A data connection method used with HDDs and optical drives. It is not another name for a hard disk.
What should you check before upgrading a PC’s storage?
Do not assume that every SATA HDD will fit or work in every PC. Check the computer’s drive bay, supported interface, and other model-specific requirements before choosing a replacement or additional drive. The amount of storage you need also depends on your usual work and file sizes; large videos and other large files call for more space. Microsoft’s guidance on storage types and needs is available in All about SSD, HDD, and storage types. Samsung Semiconductor’s HDD glossary explains the drive mechanism and SATA terminology.
