A network audio player—also called a network streamer—is a hi-fi source component that finds and plays digital music from networked libraries and, depending on the model, streaming services, internet radio, or connected storage. It usually sends audio to an amplifier or powered speakers; it is not necessarily an amplifier or a speaker itself.
What a network audio player does
The player retrieves and plays music, then passes the audio to another component in your system. Cambridge Audio describes the category as handling digital audio and accessing files from sources such as a computer, USB drive, or NAS (network-attached storage) drive, as well as streaming services and internet radio. Its beginner guide to music sources also calls the device a “network streamer.”
What is built into the player varies. Cambridge Audio’s product category page, for example, labels several products “Network Music Streamer” and describes the Edge NQ as a “Preamplifier with Network Player.” The category name alone therefore does not tell you whether a particular model has volume control or amplification.
Where it gets music
Streaming services and internet radio
Some players provide access to online services and radio through the player’s app or a service’s own control feature. Support depends on the product, generation, software, and sometimes region. For example, Cambridge Audio lists Spotify Connect, TIDAL, Qobuz, Deezer, and Amazon Music for its Gen 4 players, with access methods that vary by service. That list is specific to those players, not a category-wide guarantee; check the manufacturer’s support information for the exact model.

A computer or NAS library
A network player can also play music stored on a computer or NAS connected to your home network. Cambridge Audio says its players can access libraries from a PC, Mac, or NAS. Its computer-connection guidance recommends Ethernet where practical for a robust connection and says Wi-Fi can be used when Ethernet is impractical.
USB storage
USB playback is model-specific. Cambridge Audio says its AXN/MXN products support USB hard drives formatted as FAT32, exFAT, or NTFS, while noting that compatibility and drive power requirements can vary. Check the player’s own documentation before choosing a drive or assuming it will work; see the manufacturer’s product support information.

What else you need to use one
A network player usually needs a separate device to produce sound. Depending on its outputs and your system, it may connect to an integrated amplifier, a power amplifier, or powered speakers. Whether you can connect it directly to a given system depends on the player’s outputs and the receiving device’s inputs.
Check how the player handles output level as well as which connectors it provides. Cambridge Audio’s pre-amp mode controls analogue output level, while its digital outputs remain fixed level. That behavior is model-specific: consult the player’s manual before connecting it to an amplifier or speakers, especially if you expect the player to control volume.

How home-network setup affects playback
For music stored on a computer or NAS, the player and library need to be reachable on your home network. Ethernet is a practical option when the player is near the router; Wi-Fi may be more convenient when it is not. The best choice depends on your layout and the specific device.
App control and Connect features can also depend on local network discovery. Cambridge Audio’s troubleshooting guidance says the phone and player need to be on the same Wi-Fi network for the control pathways it describes, and that router settings affecting local discovery can contribute to connection problems. What to check before choosing a player
- Music sources: Confirm the exact streaming services, radio access, and service-control method supported by the model and generation.
- Personal library: Check whether it can browse your computer or NAS, and whether a computer must remain available for playback.
- USB: Verify supported drive formats and any power or compatibility limits if you plan to connect storage directly.
- System connections: Match the player’s analogue or digital outputs to your amplifier or powered speakers. Confirm whether analogue volume control or pre-amplifier operation is supported.
- Network and control: Check for Ethernet and Wi-Fi, the required app or platform, and any local-network conditions for discovery and control.
