Android calls its tool Android Emulator; Apple calls its virtual targets simulated devices, run with Simulator in Xcode.
What does a mobile app emulator do?
It runs an app in a software-created mobile environment on a computer instead of on a physical device. Developers can use virtual devices to check how an app behaves across different device profiles and operating-system versions. Google describes Android Emulator as a way to test across Android devices and API levels without owning each physical device: Android Emulator.
Virtual environments can also provide controls for testing conditions such as simulated calls and texts, location, network speeds, screen rotation, and sensors. These controls make it easier to repeat tests and explore cases that may be inconvenient to reproduce on a phone.
What are Android Emulator, an AVD, and Apple Simulator?
Android Emulator and Android Virtual Device
Android Emulator is the software that runs the virtual device. An Android Virtual Device (AVD) is the configuration for that device, including its Android version and hardware profile. Android Studio includes the emulator tooling. Google explains AVDs in its AVD documentation.

Apple Simulator
Apple’s Xcode workflow uses simulated devices—commonly referred to as Simulator—for destinations such as iOS, iPadOS, tvOS, visionOS, and watchOS. Apple’s documented workflow runs Simulator on a Mac. See Apple’s guide to running an app in Simulator or on a device.
Why the terms are not interchangeable in every context
People often use “emulator” informally for any virtual mobile device. For platform-accurate wording, Android has Android Emulator, while Apple’s tool is Simulator. These are platform-specific tools; an Android virtual device is not a general-purpose environment for running iPhone apps, and Apple’s Simulator is not an Android environment.

When should you use a virtual device, and when do you need a phone?

Apple specifically recommends checking on a physical device when you need to verify hardware-dependent features or real-device behavior. Its guidance explains the limits of simulated devices in the Simulator and device documentation.

Yes. A virtual device can cover much of the development, debugging, and configuration-checking work, especially when testing different profiles is more practical than keeping each device on hand. It is not a complete substitute for hardware: use a physical device when the test depends on real sensors, device-specific features, or actual performance.
