A minimum viable product (MVP) is a deliberately scoped product or experiment that helps a team learn from real customer behavior with limited effort. It must let intended users engage meaningfully with the value being tested, but it does not need to be a polished or fully automated final product.
What does MVP stand for?
MVP stands for minimum viable product. The phrase is associated with a learning-oriented first iteration, not a set number of features or a license to release something unusable. Eric Ries defines it as “that version of a new product which allows a team to collect the maximum amount of validated learning about customers with the least effort.” Ries’s explanation of the MVP stresses that the definition is not a formula: the right scope depends on what the team needs to learn.
What is the purpose of an MVP?
An MVP helps a team test an important assumption before investing in a more complete product. The question might be whether a particular problem matters to customers, whether a proposed solution is useful, or whether people will take a meaningful step to use or obtain it. The team should gather evidence from what customers do, rather than treating stated interest alone as proof of demand. Agile Alliance’s explanation emphasizes observed customer behavior as a source of learning.
The purpose is validated learning: use evidence from an experiment to decide what to do next. Lean Startup practice connects hypothesis-driven experiments and iterative releases with decisions to persevere or pivot—continue with the current direction or change it. The Lean Enterprise Institute’s Lean Startup overview describes that approach.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Does an MVP have to be a finished product?
No. An MVP can be a working product, a landing page, or a service delivered manually behind an interface that appears automated. The appropriate format depends on the assumption: users need enough of an experience to behave in a way that makes the result informative, but the team may not need to build the full system first. Agile Alliance describes different experiment forms, including manual delivery, while Microsoft for Startups’ MVP guide frames an MVP around value for real users and data from their use.
“Minimum” does not mean careless or low quality. If the experience breaks in a way that prevents intended users from trying the core value, their behavior may not answer the question the team set out to test. Nor is an MVP simply a minimal product: its defining purpose is to generate learning from an initial iteration.

How do you build an MVP?
- Start with the customer problem. Identify who has the problem and what you believe would help them.
- Name the riskiest assumption. State the uncertainty that could most change the product decision—for example, whether users need the proposed solution or will use a particular core feature.
- Define meaningful evidence. Decide what user behavior or other evidence would support or challenge that assumption. Pick measures that fit the question rather than adopting a universal scorecard.
- Choose the smallest informative experiment. Select a product slice, landing page, or manually delivered service that lets target users engage with the core value and produces interpretable evidence.
- Observe use and feedback. Collect customer behavior and relevant feedback. Keep the experiment’s limits in mind: a manual process or narrow scope can affect what the result means.
- Make the next decision. Use what you learned to continue, change direction, or test another assumption. Treat an MVP as one iteration in an ongoing process, not as a one-time miniature launch.
There is no universally correct feature count or deadline. The experiment is appropriately scoped when it can answer the team’s question with less effort than building the complete product; a smaller test is not useful if it cannot produce meaningful learning.
How should you measure an MVP?
Choose measures that reflect the hypothesis and the behavior users must perform for the test to count. Microsoft for Startups names activation, retention, and conversion as possible signals of market demand, but they are examples rather than a required MVP scorecard. Microsoft’s guide also emphasizes learning from real users and data. A measure is useful when it helps distinguish between the possible outcomes that matter to the team’s decision.

What is the difference between an MVP and a proof of concept?
A proof of concept (PoC) and an MVP address different questions. In Microsoft for Startups’ described sequence, a PoC checks whether an idea or technology can be built; an MVP is then put in front of real users to learn from use and demand. Microsoft’s MVP guide presents the PoC as preceding the MVP. Organizations may use the labels differently, so focus on the purpose of the work: technical feasibility or customer learning.

The concept is not limited to software apps. The Lean Enterprise Institute discusses applying startup-style learning and minimum functionality beyond apps, including in the context of starting, growing, and renewing organizations. Its discussion of starting up, growing up, and starting over is a useful reminder that the core idea is testing assumptions through customer learning, whatever the product or service.
