A Microsoft Surface tablet usually means a Surface Pro: a touchscreen Windows computer designed to work as a tablet on its own and as a laptop-style device when paired with a compatible keyboard. “Surface” is the name of a broader product family, so not every Surface is a tablet.
What does “Microsoft Surface tablet” mean?
In everyday use, the phrase refers most directly to a Surface Pro. Microsoft describes Surface Pro as a 2-in-1 that can switch between touch-focused tablet use and a laptop experience with a keyboard. The specific product page currently identifies the family as Surface Pro 12th Edition; that is a current model reference, not part of the definition. Microsoft’s explanation of PC tablets and laptops and its Surface Pro product page describe this hybrid design.
Is a Surface a tablet or a laptop?
A Surface Pro is both, depending on how you use it: it is a portable touchscreen Windows PC for tablet use, and a compatible keyboard lets you type in a laptop-like setup. A tablet remains a computer; Microsoft defines a tablet PC as a portable touchscreen device designed primarily for touch or stylus input, while a laptop has a built-in keyboard and trackpad. How is Surface Pro different from Surface Laptop?
Surface Pro is the Surface family’s tablet-and-laptop 2-in-1. Surface Laptop is a traditional laptop with a built-in keyboard. The Surface name covers both form factors, so the name alone does not tell you whether a device is a tablet. Microsoft’s Surface model comparison page lists the family’s distinct devices.

What can you use a Surface Pro tablet for?
Its touchscreen supports touch-first tasks such as reading, browsing, and note-taking; a compatible pen can add stylus input. With a compatible keyboard, it can also support laptop-style typing and productivity. These are use cases described by Microsoft, not a performance ranking or independent test. Do you need to buy a keyboard or pen?
No. A keyboard is not required to use Surface Pro as a tablet. Microsoft says the Surface Pro keyboard is sold separately, and accessory inclusion can differ by package. A pen is another optional accessory. Before buying, check that the keyboard or pen is compatible with the exact Surface Pro generation and configuration you want; do not assume either accessory is included.

What should you check when identifying a Surface tablet?
- Model name: Look for Surface Pro if you want the tablet-and-laptop 2-in-1 form factor; Surface Laptop is a traditional laptop.
- Generation and configuration: Compare the exact model’s processor, memory, storage, and display rather than assuming all Surface Pro devices have the same specifications.
- Region and availability: Microsoft notes that features and availability may vary by region, so check the product listing for your market.
- Accessories: Confirm whether a keyboard or pen is included and whether it fits that model.
