A Mac virtual machine (VM) is a software-managed computer that runs a guest operating system on virtual hardware supplied by a physical Mac. The Mac is the host; virtualization software allocates part of its processing power, memory, storage, and devices to the guest. A VM is not another physical Mac, and what it can run depends on the virtualization software, hardware architecture, operating-system support, and licensing.
How a Mac virtual machine works
The host is the physical Mac and its running operating system. The guest is the operating system running inside the VM. Between them, virtualization software presents virtual hardware—such as processors, memory, storage, and devices—and maps it to resources on the host.
Apple describes its VZVirtualMachine as emulating a complete hardware machine with the same architecture as the underlying Mac. In Apple’s terminology, a guest is an operating system running on top of virtual hardware. The VM remains a configurable, isolated software environment; its degree of isolation, device support, and usability depend on the implementation. See Apple’s VZVirtualMachine documentation and Hypervisor overview.
What can run in a Mac VM?
Apple’s Virtualization framework provides APIs for creating and managing VMs on both Apple silicon and Intel-based Macs. Apple documents macOS and Linux guests and configurable virtual devices using standard interfaces. Its macOS guest setup documentation, however, focuses on Apple silicon: developers select a compatible VZMacHardwareModel, set virtual CPU and memory resources, configure devices, obtain a macOS restore image from Apple, install the guest, and boot it with a macOS boot loader. Apple’s Virtualization documentation and macOS guest setup guide describe these APIs and steps.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Architecture compatibility matters
Virtualization does not make processor architectures interchangeable. On Apple silicon, Apple documents support for Linux guests and Intel application translation inside ARM Linux guests under specified macOS versions. That translation does not let you install or boot an Intel Linux distribution on Apple silicon. Check that the host, guest OS, and applications you need are supported by the chosen VM software.
Windows, macOS, and Linux are not interchangeable cases
Parallels Desktop is a commercial Mac application whose vendor documents running Windows and macOS alongside macOS, and an Apple silicon virtualization engine for Arm-based VMs. The exact guest OS, processor architecture, product edition, and license terms depend on the intended setup; verify them with the vendor’s Parallels Desktop product information. Apple’s framework, by contrast, is an API for developers building VM apps, not a turnkey consumer application.

Mac VM versus dual boot
A VM runs its guest under the host operating system, so you can use the guest as a separate environment while the Mac host remains running. Dual boot instead selects an operating system at startup. A VM is therefore not simply another name for dual boot, and its resource use and device access depend on the virtualization implementation.
VM app or developer framework?
| Option | Who it is for | What the documentation establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Apple Virtualization framework | Developers building VM applications | Apple provides APIs to create and manage VMs on Apple silicon and Intel-based Macs, with documented macOS and Linux guests and configurable virtual devices. See Apple’s framework documentation. |
| Parallels Desktop for Mac | People seeking a commercial Mac VM application | The vendor documents running Windows and macOS alongside macOS and an Apple silicon engine for Arm-based VMs. Confirm current guest support, architecture, edition, and licensing for your use case. See the product information. |
Choose by the task you need to do, supported host and guest architectures and versions, setup effort, integrations and devices, licensing, and current cost. The documentation cited here does not establish an independent performance comparison, so it does not support naming a performance winner or promising native-speed execution.

macOS licensing and iCloud considerations
Apple’s macOS Sequoia license permits up to two additional copies or instances of Apple software in virtual operating system environments on each Apple-branded computer already running Apple software, for specified purposes: software development, testing during software development, using macOS Server, or personal, non-commercial use. The license also restricts certain service-bureau, time-sharing, terminal-sharing, relay, and similar uses. Terms depend on how the software was obtained, and Apple notes that the agreement accompanying a purchase may differ from the version on its legal site. Check the agreement for your macOS version and acquisition method; consult the Apple software license agreements.
Apple documents iCloud access for macOS 15 and later VMs on Apple silicon only under particular conditions, including use of a macOS 15 image and a hardware model obtained through Apple’s restore-image APIs. Moving a VM to another Mac changes its identity and can require iCloud reauthentication. This is version- and configuration-specific, not a guarantee for every macOS VM. See Apple’s iCloud guidance for macOS VMs.

What to check before creating a VM
- Identify the guest operating system and the applications or devices you need to use.
- Confirm that the virtualization product supports the host Mac, guest version, and CPU architectures involved.
- For a macOS guest, check the applicable Apple software license and the VM’s image and hardware-model requirements.
- Check integration requirements, including iCloud if needed, against the documented macOS version and configuration.
- Allow for the fact that the guest uses resources from the host Mac; performance and available devices depend on the implementation and configuration.
