A live streaming encoder converts live audio and video into a compressed digital stream and sends it to a platform’s ingest server. It can be software on your computer, an encoding component built into a GPU, or a dedicated hardware device. You may already have what you need: many streaming applications include an encoder, so buying a separate box is not a requirement.
What does a live streaming encoder do?
A camera, microphone, or computer produces audio and video. The encoder compresses that material using a codec and settings the streaming platform accepts, then sends it over an ingest connection. The platform receives and processes the stream for viewers. YouTube, for example, transcodes live streams into multiple output formats to serve different devices and network conditions.
Several jobs that are often bundled together are worth distinguishing:
- Capture: A camera or microphone records or supplies the original picture and sound.
- Switching and composition: A switcher or streaming application can choose inputs, arrange scenes, and combine sources.
- Encoding: Software or hardware compresses the audio and video into a stream.
- Ingest and distribution: The platform receives the stream, processes it, and delivers playback to viewers.
One application or device may handle several of these jobs, but the terms are not interchangeable. A codec such as H.264 describes how media is encoded; a protocol such as RTMPS describes how the stream is transported; the encoder is the software or device doing the encoding and sending.

Do you need a separate encoder?
Usually, not if you already have a computer capable of running a streaming application at your chosen resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. OBS Studio, for example, includes the x264 software encoder and can use compatible hardware encoding. A dedicated encoder is an option for a standalone or production-oriented setup, not a basic requirement for streaming.
Choose by workflow and workload rather than the word “encoder” on a product label:
- Software encoding: Uses the computer’s processor. It can be sufficient when the computer has enough capacity for the stream and other tasks.
- Hardware encoding: Uses a specialized component, often in a GPU, to take encoding work off the CPU. OBS says modern hardware encoders can deliver very good quality with limited performance impact, but earlier generations may produce lower quality at the same bitrate than software encoding at OBS’s stated comparison preset. The result depends on the hardware generation, implementation, settings, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity.
- Dedicated hardware encoder: A separate device may suit a setup that needs a standalone appliance or a production workflow. Verify the exact device’s inputs, supported codecs and protocols, resolutions, frame rates, and platform compatibility; the category alone does not establish that it will outperform a computer.
For computer-based streaming, OBS’s system requirements are not a guarantee that a particular machine can handle every streaming or recording workload. Consider what else the computer is doing—such as gaming or running a complex production—and leave enough CPU or GPU capacity for the complete job.

How do codec, bitrate, protocol, and keyframes fit together?
These settings describe different parts of the stream. The codec compresses audio or video; bitrate is the amount of encoded data sent per second; the ingest protocol carries the stream to the platform; and keyframes are reference frames used in video encoding. The platform’s current guidance and the capabilities of your encoder should determine the combination.

YouTube encoder settings
YouTube’s encoder-settings guidance for RTMP/RTMPS lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video, up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. Its figures are YouTube recommendations, not universal settings for other platforms.
For example, YouTube’s table recommends these video bitrates for the following combinations:

These are platform-published settings from YouTube’s current help page, accessed October 3, 2026; they are not results of an independent performance test. Consult YouTube’s live guidance for the full table and any changes. A bitrate must also fit your available upload connection. YouTube advises testing upload speed and choosing a reliable quality rather than assuming a connection can sustain a target rate.
Choosing an ingest protocol
YouTube supports RTMP, RTMPS, HLS, and DASH ingest, with differences in codec support and latency. RTMP supports H.264 and is unencrypted; RTMPS adds encryption and is suitable for ordinary and low-latency streaming. HLS supports H.264 and H.265/HEVC, while DASH supports H.264 and VP9. HLS and DASH can suit some high-resolution workflows, but their segment-based delivery typically adds more latency than RTMP. There is no universally best protocol: match the platform, desired latency, codec, and encoder.
For YouTube RTMPS, the connection carries RTMP through SSL/TLS. The encoder needs a valid RTMPS endpoint and path and must connect on port 443; correct server hostname and SNI handling also matter. YouTube recommends RTMPS to encrypt data in transit to its servers. Keep your stream key private: it is a credential, not a setting to share publicly.

How to choose an encoder for your setup
Compare the options against the work you need to do, not just a headline resolution or a device category. Before buying hardware or changing a working setup, check:
- Workflow: Can software on your existing computer do the job, can a GPU encoder reduce CPU load, or does your setup genuinely need a standalone device?
- Compatibility: Does the encoder support the platform’s codec, ingest protocol, operating system, drivers, and required bitrate or rate-control mode?
- Workload: Can it handle your target resolution and frame rate along with your scenes, sources, gaming, or other production tasks?
- Network: Can your upload connection sustain the chosen bitrate reliably? Test it under realistic conditions and monitor stream health during a broadcast.
- Latency and sources: Do you need low latency, portability, multiple input types, or a standalone appliance? Confirm each requirement against the specific device documentation.
For a concrete dedicated-device example, Magewell’s Ultra Encode manual documents a YouTube streaming workflow. That documentation supports it as an example, not a general performance comparison or a current price or availability claim.

- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
- The stream will not connect: Check that the selected protocol and endpoint match the platform, that the full server path is correct, and that the stream key is entered in the encoder rather than exposed publicly. For RTMPS, check port 443 and hostname/SNI handling.
- The stream buffers or drops: Test upload speed and choose a bitrate and quality your connection can sustain reliably. Do not assume that a brief speed test guarantees stable bandwidth throughout a broadcast.
- The picture is poor: Verify resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate against the platform’s guidance. A platform recommendation is a starting point; the result also depends on the content and encoder implementation.
- The computer struggles: Reduce competing workload or consider a compatible hardware encoder if preserving CPU capacity matters. Check whether the encoder, drivers, and selected settings are supported together.
- Latency is higher than expected: Review the ingest protocol and platform latency options. YouTube states that 4K/2160p streams cannot use its “improve for low latency” option and run at normal latency.
Copyright and platform rules still apply
An encoder only prepares and sends the stream; it does not grant rights to the content or determine whether a broadcast complies with platform rules. Before streaming, make sure you have the necessary rights to music, video, images, and other material, and review the platform’s current live-stream policies. An encoding setup can work technically while the content itself remains unsuitable or unauthorized.
