A link popularity checker is a backlink-analysis tool: it estimates how many links point to a website or page and often reports the number of distinct linking domains. Use it to inspect a site’s link profile—not as a definitive count of every link or as a Google ranking score.
What a link popularity checker measures
The term “link popularity” is an informal way to describe a site’s link profile. A checker finds links in its own index and presents counts or related metrics; different tools may show different results because they maintain separate link datasets and update them on their own schedules.
A backlink is a hyperlink from one website to another. A referring domain is a domain with at least one backlink to the target. If one website links to your page five times, that is five backlinks but one referring domain. Ahrefs explains the distinction and describes reports that can analyze a whole website, an individual page, or a subfolder.
Why links matter—and what a checker cannot tell you
Google says it uses links to help determine page relevance and discover pages to crawl. Its link best practices state: “Google uses links as a signal when determining the relevancy of pages and to find new pages to crawl.” Google’s ranking-systems guide also says link-analysis systems help it understand pages and that PageRank remains part of its core ranking systems, though it has evolved.

A link count by itself does not establish whether links are relevant, high quality, driving referrals, or improving rankings. Nor is a vendor’s authority score a Google score. Ahrefs describes Domain Rating (DR) as its proprietary metric, while Semrush describes Authority Score as its own measure based on backlink quality and quantity. These metrics can help compare sites within the same tool, but they are not identified as Google metrics, and values may differ between providers. How to use a link popularity checker
- Choose the target scope. Decide whether you need a domain-wide view, one page, or a subfolder. Keep the scope consistent when comparing reports.
- Read backlinks and referring domains together. A large backlink total may come from repeated links on a small number of sites. The distinct-domain count gives a different view of the profile.
- Inspect available link details. Review the linking pages and domains, and use follow/nofollow filters if the tool offers them. Treat the report as a way to investigate changes and potential relevant links, not as a score to chase.
- Compare tools on equal terms. Check the same target as closely as possible, and note the date, report scope, filters, visible rows, historical views, exports, and each provider’s metric definitions. A free lookup may show less than an expanded analytics report; Semrush describes its free checker alongside expanded Backlink Analytics features such as filters and exports.
- For a site you control, also consult Google Search Console. Use it as a first-party reference alongside commercial checkers, rather than assuming any third-party index is complete.

There is no single best tool for every task. Match the checker to what you need to see:

- Target scope: Can it check a domain, page, or subfolder?
- Useful counts: Does it separate total backlinks from unique referring domains?
- Link-level investigation: Can you inspect individual URLs and domains, filter link attributes, or view historical changes?
- Reporting needs: Do you need exports or expanded reports, or is a quick free lookup enough?
- Metric definitions: Are proprietary authority measures explained, and are you comparing them only within that provider’s tool?

A checker is for measurement and investigation; its counts are not a reason to buy links or automate link creation. Google defines link spam as creating links to or from a site primarily to manipulate search rankings. Its examples include buying or selling links for ranking purposes and using automated programs or services to create links. For advertising or sponsorship links, Google says to qualify them with rel="nofollow" or rel="sponsored". See Google’s link-spam policy.
