A “leased line modem” usually means the equipment that connects customer data equipment, such as a router, to a provider’s dedicated digital circuit. For a legacy T1-type leased line, the more precise term is often CSU/DSU (Channel Service Unit/Data Service Unit). The right equipment depends on the circuit and the provider’s handoff; the phrase does not name one universal device.
What is a leased line?
A leased line is a dedicated point-to-point wide-area network connection between endpoints, ordered from a telecom or WAN provider. Unlike a general-purpose internet connection, the term describes the service or circuit, not a particular modem. Cisco Press describes leased lines as point-to-point WAN links.
Why is “leased line modem” an imprecise term?
“Modem” is understandable as a rough description of equipment between customer data devices and a carrier line, but it is not established as one universal product category for leased lines. On certain digital circuits, including T1 and fractional T1 examples, technical references identify a CSU/DSU as the relevant interface device. That does not mean every modern Ethernet or fiber leased service uses one.
For those circuits, a CSU/DSU links a router or other data terminal equipment to the provider’s digital line. It may be a separate external unit or a function integrated into a router. TechTarget explains its role in adapting data frames for the WAN; Oracle describes its use on leased-line PPP links.

What do the CSU and DSU do?
- Channel Service Unit (CSU): Interfaces with and terminates the telecom channel.
- Data Service Unit (DSU): Adapts the data-side interface and framing for customer equipment, converting between LAN data frames and a WAN-appropriate format.
Together, these functions allow customer equipment to communicate over the provider’s digital circuit. The exact implementation and settings depend on the service.
How to identify the equipment your leased line needs
Ask the provider or service contact about the circuit and customer handoff before buying anything. Providers may supply or configure a CSU/DSU, and they can advise what is required if it is not included. For T1 service, the provider also determines the required line-code type, according to Cisco’s serial-interface documentation.

- Confirm the circuit technology and speed, such as T1 or fractional T1, or ask what other service is being delivered.
- Ask for the physical and data interface at the customer demarcation point.
- Confirm whether the provider supplies the termination device or expects the customer to provide it.
- Verify the required framing, line coding, timing, and router interface.
- If a CSU/DSU is needed, ask whether a standalone unit or a router with the function integrated is appropriate for that handoff.
Is a leased line modem the same as a DSL or cable modem?
Do not assume so. A CSU/DSU for a legacy synchronous digital circuit has a different role from an ordinary DSL or cable modem, and the term “leased line modem” alone does not establish which device or interface a service requires. Modern leased services can have different handoffs; identify the actual circuit and provider interface first.
