A Layer 2 switch connects devices on an Ethernet LAN and forwards frames using MAC addresses. It learns which devices are reachable through which ports, then sends known traffic toward the right port. Its forwarding applies within a Layer 2 segment, such as a VLAN; some switches also provide Layer 3 routing.
What a Layer 2 switch does
A Layer 2 switch is an Ethernet bridge: it receives Ethernet frames and makes its basic forwarding decision from the destination MAC address, rather than the destination IP address. The forwarding domain is typically a LAN segment or VLAN. Juniper’s Layer 2 networking overview describes this MAC-based forwarding behavior.
For each frame, the switch can learn from the source MAC address which port the frame arrived on. It records that association in a switching table, then checks the destination MAC against the table to decide where the frame should go. Juniper describes transparent bridging as relying on learning, forwarding, flooding, filtering, and aging to create and maintain Ethernet switching tables in its bridging and VLAN documentation.
How a Layer 2 switch forwards frames
Known destination
If the destination MAC address is in the switching table, the switch forwards the frame toward the associated port, within the relevant Layer 2 forwarding domain.

Unknown destination
If the switch has no table entry for the destination, it can flood the frame to eligible ports in that same VLAN or bridge domain. Learning where source addresses appear helps reduce unnecessary flooding as the switch builds its table.
How VLANs fit in
A VLAN is a logical Layer 2 segment. It scopes the traffic and MAC-address learning context, so the switch forwards frames within the applicable VLAN rather than treating every port as part of one unrestricted domain. VLANs are commonly used to segment LAN traffic. Juniper’s bridging and VLAN documentation covers this relationship.

Layer 2 switching versus Layer 3 routing
Layer 2 bridging and Layer 3 routing describe different forwarding functions. A Layer 2 switch uses MAC-address information to forward Ethernet frames. A router makes forwarding decisions using Layer 3 information, such as IP addresses. These functions are not mutually exclusive: one device can bridge traffic and also route it. Juniper’s Layer 2 bridging configuration documentation, for example, describes bridge domains that can include a routing interface for Layer 3 IP routing.
