The two kinds of behavior interact as parts of one system; merely connecting a digital computer to a physical process does not, by itself, capture what makes a system hybrid.
What does “hybrid control system” mean?
The term describes a system in which continuous dynamics and discrete dynamics influence one another. Continuous dynamics represent quantities that evolve over time, often physical states. Discrete dynamics represent logic, decisions, operating modes, or events that change the system’s behavior.
As Heemels, Lehmann, Lunze, and De Schutter put it in their Cambridge University Press chapter “Wherever continuous and discrete dynamics interact, hybrid systems arise.” The key word is interact: a mode change can alter how a physical state evolves, while the physical state can determine when a mode change occurs.
How do flow and jump describe the behavior?
A common formal vocabulary describes a hybrid system in terms of flows and jumps. Flow is continuous-time evolution; a jump is a discrete transition. A model can specify where flow is allowed and how the state evolves there, as well as where a jump is enabled and how the state changes at that transition.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Flow set and flow map: the conditions under which continuous evolution is permitted and the rule governing that evolution.
- Jump set and jump map: the conditions that enable a discrete transition and the rule for the resulting change. A jump may change a discrete mode, reset a continuous state, or do both.
The particular equations, switching conditions, and reset rules depend on the system being modeled; “flow and jump” names a modeling approach, not one universal set of equations.
How does a thermostat illustrate a hybrid system?
In a room with a thermostat, temperature changes continuously, while the heater’s control logic switches discretely between on and off. The temperature may affect when the thermostat switches modes, and the selected mode affects how the temperature then changes.

A purely continuous model would leave out the heater’s discrete on/off logic. A purely discrete model would leave out the room’s changing temperature. The hybrid description includes both and their interaction.
How is a hybrid system different from a hybrid controller?
These related terms refer to different parts of a control setup. The Springer Nature reference on hybrid control systems distinguishes a hybrid system, a hybrid controller, and a hybrid closed loop:

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.
- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Hybrid dynamical system: a system whose behavior includes flows and jumps.
- Hybrid controller: an algorithm that combines continuous-time and discrete-time control behavior.
- Hybrid closed loop: the connected plant-and-controller system when at least one of those components is hybrid.
So “hybrid controller” does not simply mean any digital controller attached to a physical device. The relevant question is whether the modeled control behavior itself combines continuous-time and discrete-time elements.
Where are hybrid control systems used?
Hybrid models are useful when both physical evolution and discrete decisions matter. The IEEE Control Systems Society identifies aircraft flight management, transportation, robotic vehicles, and human-automation systems as application areas. An introductory discussion in IEEE Transactions on Automatic Control also names manufacturing, communication networks, autopilot design, computer synchronization, traffic control, and industrial process control.

These are examples of fields where hybrid behavior may be relevant, not a claim that every system in those fields must be modeled as hybrid. The choice depends on the behavior that needs to be represented and analyzed.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why are there different hybrid-system modeling approaches?
Hybrid behavior can be represented with different formalisms. As the IFAC survey “Modeling and Control of Hybrid Systems: A Survey” notes, the field includes a variety of modeling approaches, including work on verification and control synthesis. No single notation is best for every purpose.

When choosing a representation, consider:
- Which continuous states, discrete modes, and events the model needs to capture.
- How it expresses switching conditions and any state resets.
- Whether its modeling capabilities suit the intended analysis or controller-design task.
- How complex the resulting model will be to analyze or use.
