A host bus adapter (HBA) connects a computer’s host bus to an input/output (I/O) interconnect. In a server, it provides a path between the system and storage devices, enclosures, or shared storage. The term describes the adapter’s role—not one specific protocol, connector, or feature set.
What does a host bus adapter connect?
An HBA sits on the host side of an I/O path. Depending on the system and adapter, that path can lead to directly attached drives, a storage enclosure, or shared storage elsewhere in a network. The Storage Networking Industry Association (SNIA) defines an HBA as “an I/O adapter that connects a host computer bus to an I/O interconnect” in its SNIA Dictionary, dated June 26, 2024.
In SCSI terminology, the Linux kernel’s SCSI Interfaces Guide uses HBA for the controller that connects a host to a bus carrying SCSI commands. That does not mean every HBA uses the same physical connection: SCSI commands can travel over different transports, including USB, SATA, SAS, Fibre Channel, FireWire, and ATAPI.

No. The acronym does not identify a single protocol. SNIA says HBA is the preferred term for Fibre Channel and SAS interconnects, but the term is also used more broadly in storage contexts. For example, Broadcom describes PCIe adapters supporting SAS, SATA, and NVMe storage in its host bus adapter product family.

Check the exact adapter specification before choosing drives, cables, or an enclosure. The card’s supported protocol and connector determine what it can connect to; the name “HBA” alone does not.
What is the difference between an HBA and a port?
The HBA is the adapter; a port is one of its connections. A physical adapter can have one or more ports. Lenovo describes an HBA board in a host as containing one or more host ports in its ThinkSystem documentation. SNIA’s Fibre Channel HBA specification likewise describes a physical device that contains one or more Fibre Channel ports.

When evaluating a card, distinguish the number of ports from the number and type of devices it can support. Also check whether the ports are internal or external and whether their connectors match the intended cables.
Is an HBA the same as a RAID controller?
Not necessarily. “HBA” does not guarantee hardware RAID, cache, or a particular pass-through mode. Those capabilities vary by model: Samsung’s HBA overview notes that some HBAs support RAID and some use DRAM cache. Check the exact product documentation for the features and operating modes you need rather than inferring them from the HBA label.

Can an HBA be virtual?
Yes, in specific virtualization architectures. Oracle’s Solaris documentation describes a virtual SCSI HBA made up of a virtual HBA in a guest domain and a virtual SAN in a service domain; together, those components implement a SCSI HBA interface. This is a documented virtual use of the term, not a definition of every HBA. See Oracle’s virtual I/O documentation.

- Protocol and device type: Confirm support for the intended SAS, SATA, Fibre Channel, or NVMe devices.
- Ports and connectors: Check the number and type of ports, whether they are internal or external, and the cables they require.
- Host compatibility: Confirm the server has a suitable PCIe slot and supports the adapter.
- Operating system and drivers: Verify support for the system’s OS and required driver.
- Storage behavior: Check whether you need RAID, pass-through, boot support, or cache, and confirm the exact model provides it.
These checks matter because adapters differ in protocol support, port configuration, and features. A product-family description is not proof that a particular card will work in a particular server; use the current specification for the chosen model.
