A horizontal search engine is a general-purpose search service that covers many topics across the web. A vertical search engine specializes in a narrower category or format, such as travel, jobs, images, or maps. The key difference is the breadth of what each service searches—not necessarily how it finds and ranks information.

What “horizontal” means in search

“Horizontal” describes a search engine with broad subject coverage. The European Commission defines general search engines as services that return results across any category of information on the web. A US House Judiciary Committee report describes horizontal engines as aiming to provide a comprehensive list of general search results.

“Comprehensive” is a description of the broad approach, not a promise that an engine searches every website, database, or other source. For example, Google explains that its crawlers find pages for its index, and its systems return pages they consider relevant to a query. Google’s explanation of how Search works also notes that results and features can vary with the query, language, location, and device.

Horizontal and vertical search compared

Type Scope Examples Best suited to
Horizontal search Many topics and categories across the web Google Search is an example of broad web search. Finding information when the subject is broad or not yet specific
Vertical search A particular category of information or format Travel, flights, jobs, real estate, images, video, maps, and news Searching within a defined subject or for a specific type of result

The European Commission’s definitions include categories such as people, weather, news, shopping, and flights, as well as formats such as photos, videos, and maps. The US House Judiciary Committee gives images and travel as examples of narrower vertical search. These are examples of specializations; a service’s exact features and boundaries can change over time.

How vertical search works

A vertical engine can use the same basic search process as a horizontal one: it can crawl or gather information, index it, and rank results. The difference is that it limits its coverage to a niche, such as job listings, flights, or real estate. That focus can make its results more useful for a specific task because the service is organized around the information people need in that domain.

Some vertical services also let users take a next step, rather than only discover information. A travel search service may support buying a holiday package, for instance, while a car-sale search service may connect a prospective buyer with a dealer. The European Union Intellectual Property Office discusses these kinds of domain-specific functions in its 2024 discussion paper on search engines.

Which kind should you use?

  • Start with horizontal search when you want a broad overview, are exploring an unfamiliar topic, or do not yet know which specialist source will help.
  • Use vertical search when you already know the category—such as flights, jobs, or images—and want results designed for that task.
  • Use both when useful: broad search can help you discover sources or terminology, while a specialist service can narrow the search or provide actions specific to the subject.

Why the terms describe scope, not a fixed product category

Horizontal and vertical are useful ways to describe search coverage, but they are not labels for completely different technical methods. Both kinds of service can organize and rank information. A broadly focused service can also offer specialized features, and a vertical service can combine search with tools for completing a transaction. Classify a service by the scope of the search you are discussing, rather than assuming that every feature fits neatly into one category.
