A hardware serial number identifies an individual device within the numbering scheme used by its manufacturer or other issuer. Support teams use it to look up device-specific service and warranty records; organizations can use it for inventory and traceability. It is not automatically unique across every maker or system, and it is different from a model number, asset tag, or a full regulatory identifier such as a medical-device UDI.
What a hardware serial number identifies
A serial number (SN) is assigned to a particular manufactured unit. Its uniqueness depends on the issuer’s rules: an organization might guarantee uniqueness across all its output, or only within a product, part, lot, or batch context. U.S. defense procurement rules, for example, place responsibility for defining uniqueness on the enterprise and say an assigned number is not reused. That is a specific procurement framework, not a universal rule for every manufacturer or consumer device. DFARS 252.211-7003
In practical terms, a serial number helps connect the physical unit in front of you to records held by a manufacturer, service provider, or organization. The number by itself does not necessarily reveal those records, prove ownership, establish authenticity, or identify a device globally.
How a serial number differs from other identifiers
| Identifier | What it identifies | Typical issuer and scope | Common use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Serial number (SN) | An individual unit within a serialization scheme | Usually the manufacturer; uniqueness is defined by that issuer’s scheme | Service, troubleshooting, warranty records, and unit-level inventory |
| Product or model identifier | A product family, type, or model rather than one particular unit | Manufacturer; shared by many units of the same product | Finding compatible support information, drivers, parts, or documentation |
| Version identifier (VID) | A hardware version or revision | Manufacturer; shared by units with the same revision | Distinguishing hardware changes that can matter for support or upgrades |
| Asset tag | An item in an organization’s own inventory | Organization; scope is defined by its inventory system | Internal tracking and asset-management workflows |
| Unique Device Identification (UDI) | A regulated device identity made up of a device identifier and, when applicable, production information | Under the U.S. FDA framework, the device identifier identifies the labeler and model/version; a production identifier may include a serial number, lot or batch, or dates | Medical-device identification and traceability |
These identifiers can appear together on a label or in a database. Cisco’s Unique Device Identifier (UDI), for instance, includes a product ID, version ID, and serial number. Cisco says the combination of product ID and serial number is unique across Cisco products; that statement is specific to Cisco’s system, not a guarantee about serial numbers from other manufacturers. Its version ID can distinguish notable hardware changes. Cisco Catalyst 9400 hardware installation guide

An asset tag can coexist with the manufacturer’s serial number: the organization may assign a local inventory label while retaining the OEM identifier for service. ISO/IEC 19770-6:2024 defines a format for transporting hardware identification tag data; it does not prescribe every process in a broader IT asset-management program. ISO describes security, asset management, and logistics as possible markets for tools that collect and process these tags. ISO/IEC 19770-6:2024
Why support asks for your device’s serial number
A model number tells support what kind of product you have. A serial number can help identify which particular unit is involved and connect it to relevant records. Microsoft’s documentation says manufacturers typically use the SMBIOS SerialNumber property to help identify devices for servicing and troubleshooting. ASUS lists warranty or repair requests, customer support, firmware and driver updates, and product registration among reasons a serial number may be requested. Warranty tracking is another possible use, but the exact rules depend on the seller, manufacturer, contract, and jurisdiction. DFARS defines warranty tracking in its procurement context as the ability to trace a warranted item from delivery through the end of warranty effectivity. That does not establish one universal consumer-warranty process. DFARS 252.211-7003

Some manufacturers also use serials in official authenticity or warranty-checking tools. Huawei’s support instructions, for example, describe checking authenticity and warranty information, including expected warranty expiration and intended purchase market. That is an example of one vendor’s process, not proof that any online serial-number checker can authenticate any device. Huawei support: Check authenticity and warranty

How serials help with inventory, recalls, and regulated products
In an enterprise, identifiers can support automated inventory and help distinguish a product type from a specific unit or hardware revision. Cisco describes its UDI as supporting electronic inventory automation, identification of serviceable or replaceable products, version visibility, and discovery of products affected by a recall or upgrade. The combination matters: a product ID identifies the type, a version ID can identify the revision, and a serial number can identify a unit under Cisco’s scheme. For medical devices, a serial number may be one part of a broader UDI rather than the whole identifier. The FDA describes its UDI system as intended to identify medical devices sold in the United States from manufacturing through distribution to patient use. A UDI has a device identifier (DI) and, when applicable, a production identifier (PI). The PI may include a serial number, lot or batch number, expiration date, or manufacture date; the DI is the key used in the FDA database. UDI labeling is designed to be human- and machine-readable, subject to applicable exceptions and alternatives. Coverage and requirements vary, so the serial number alone should not be treated as the full UDI. FDA: Unique Device Identification System

Where to find a device’s serial number
Location varies by manufacturer, device category, and model. Common places include a label or sticker on the device, its packaging, warranty documentation, or a system-information or BIOS/UEFI screen. ASUS documents several routes across its product categories, but the correct instructions depend on the exact model. Use the manufacturer’s official support page or documentation rather than assuming every device exposes the number in the same place. ASUS support: How to find product serial number

Privacy: treat serial numbers as persistent device identifiers
A serial number becomes more sensitive when it is linked to a person, account, support history, purchase, or location. Share it when a manufacturer, authorized service provider, or trusted inventory workflow needs it, and avoid publishing the full value in a public post. Access controls matter: Microsoft’s Windows API documentation, for example, describes a capability or privileged-app requirement for access to the SMBIOS serial-number property.
A 2025 study of custom Android systems, not all Android devices or all hardware, analyzed 1,814 custom ROMs. The authors identified 8,192 system properties and 3,620 settings storing non-resettable identifiers; they found 3,477 properties and 1,336 settings lacked adequate access control. The authors also used 32 devices for remote-service validation. These findings concern identifier storage and access channels in the study’s custom-ROM scope; they do not show that every serial number is exposed or universally accessible. IDRadar study, 2025
